RICHARD'S BAY DESALINATION
PLANT
In 2016, the Richards Bay
Water Authority in Durban was
experiencing a water shortage
and needed rapid deployment
of a water desalination solution
to process approximately
10,000 m3/d. With a project
value of about $6 million RWL
Israel supplied, installed and
commissioned 10 Nirobox
containerised desalination
units from its Israel production
facility and began treated water
production within six months of
confi rming the order.
MOSSEL BAY DESALINATION PLANT
In 2010, the worst drought in more than 130 years
cause the southern Cape to be declared a disaster area.
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies South Africa was
awarded the contract to design, manufacture, supply,
maintain and operate a turnkey seawater desalination
plant that was 10 times as big as any previously built
in South Africa. The short construction timeline led
to components being air-freighted to site, rather than
shipped. The plant produces 5,000 m3/d for use by
PetroSA, and 10,000 m3/d for municipal use.
