IDA Kuwait to host IDA Fellowship Program for 2012 Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity & Water is to be the new host agency for the International Desalination Association's Fellowship Program in 2012. Now in its fourth year, the program carries a monetary award of US$ 10,000. Established in 2008, the IDA Fellowship is considered one of the industry's most prestigious awards, recognizing individuals with exceptional professional achievements and dedication to advancing desalination and water reuse. It plays an important role in promoting education and fostering information exchange among industry professionals – two essential aspects in the fulfilment of IDA's mission of supporting development of and promoting the use of desalination and desalination technology globally. IDA OPENS CHANNABASAPPA SCHOLARSHIP FOR APPLICATIONS The International Desalination Association (IDA) announced on 10 April 2012 that applications are being accepted for the 2012 Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship. The deadline for applications is 1 June 2012. The recipient(s) will be announced in August. In addition to the monetary award, each Fellow begins an attachment with a host agency – a high-profile public utility or well-respected research organization – working alongside colleagues in the desalination industry, gaining insights into the host agency's operations, strategies and policies, and ultimately exchanging ideas with the global desalination community following this attachment. The host agency also benefits from the IDA Fellow's experience, knowledge and exposure to best practices. In 2008, PUB became the first host agency for the Fellowship Award program. Subsequent host agencies were Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) in Saudi Arabia in 2009, Water Corporation and Murdoch University in Australia in 2010, and the United States Bureau of Reclamation in 2011. AMERICAN MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION AMTA MOVES TO NEW WEBSITE The American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA) has a new web address. AMTA secretary-general Janet Jaworski told D&WR that the association is still working on parts of the website, but has transferred over to promote the AMTA/Water Environment Federation workshop in Seattle in September. The new web address is www.amtaorg.com, although the old address is still accessible. The email for information is admin@ amtaorg.com. AMTA WORKSHOP SET FOR VIRGINIA AMTA will hold a workshop in Fairfax, Virginia, on 16-18 July 2012. The venue will be the Hyatt hotel. Further details will be available soon. AMTA RECEIVES US$ 150,000 FROM ADC DISSOLUTION The American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA) revealed on 28 February 2012 how it was going to use the US$ 151,000 donated to it by the Affordable Desalination Consortium (ADC) on its dissolution. Through this program, IDA awards scholarship grants of up to US$ 10,000 per calendar year to one or more graduate students studying engineering or science in preparation for a career in desalination or water technologies. The goal of the Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship is to encourage engineers and scientists to further their education in subjects related to desalination and water reuse. To download an application form, visit the IDA website. For further information, contact Leslie Merrill at lmerrill@idadesal.org. l Further the membrane database to include operational costs l Enhance AMTA's white papers with real-life examples l Work towards a comprehensive membrane plant design manual/guidelines textbook l Assist states in development/update of membrane design/ permitting guidelines l Continue fund of research projects involving desalination l Establish scholarships, grants, stipends or awards l For the first five years, an annual scholarship, grant and/or stipend of not less than 5%/year of the donation should be awarded. At an AMTA members meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, John McHarg, head of ADC throughout its extended life from 2004 to 2011, reviewed the many achievements in the project in proving that recent technological advances had brought down the energy cost of desalination. The cheque was officially handed to Peter Waldron, AMTA president. CARIBBEAN DESALINATION ASSOCIATION CARIBDA OPENS REGISTRATION FOR ARUBA CONFERENCE The Caribbean Desalination Association (CaribDA) has opened registration for its 2012 Conference & Exposition 80 Years Of Desalination Makes For One Happy Island. The conference will be held during 19-22 June 2012 at the Westin Resort & Casino, Aruba, in conjunction with WEB Aruba NV's 80th Anniversary Celebration. A brochure containing full details of the conference program, registration details and accomodation can be downloaded from the CaribDA website www.caribda.com. ADC's work showed that in California, where the ADC membership organisations were primarily based, desalination energy costs were approaching those of other principal methods of water supply. AMTA will use the donation to fund its publications/outreach committee with these objectives: PRECONFERENCE WORKSHOP A workshop on Understanding and Preventing Corrosion in Caribbean SWRO Plants will take place on 19 June 2012 prior to the CaribDA Conference. Dr Glenn Byrne of Rolled Alloys will present the one-day workshop. He will discuss the different types of corrosion affecting the high-pressure piping in seawater reverse-osmosis (SWRO) systems, how to recognize the source and type of corrosion and how to prevent corrosion.
