TECHNOLOGY enables the Indonesian service contractor to monitor the operation of the system from his office in the capital, Jakarta. Not only will the contractor have access to all essential operational data through text messages, but he will also be able to carry out more precise trouble-shooting from the office. With site locations often many hours or even several days away from Jakarta, it is critical to be able to bring the right parts to site. This possibility has been increased so that travel time and costs are minimised and down-time is as brief as possible. The water filling stations are managed by the CBOs and the individual households pay cash for the drinking water they buy. There are typically two CBO-employed caretakers, who have been trained to maintain the technical installations to a certain level. Beyond that, backup is available from the Indonesian contractor that constructed the water filling stations. communities have been buying drinking water in bottles or 5-gallon containers at a relatively high cost. The typical cost of a 5 gallon container (19 litres) is around Rupiah (IR) 5,000–12,000 (US$ 0.5–1.3). In the past the households of these Project1 30/4/12 9:49 am Page 1 Figure 6: Top marks for water quality. The typical price is now around IR 2,000–5,000 (US$ 0.2-0.5). It is estimated that the community-based organisations will be able to generate an income of up to US$ 225 per day. However, it is recognised that factors With the current water filling stations At Severn Trent Services we offer innovative treatment solutions to meet a variety of desalination and water reuse needs. - MicroDynamics® microwave UV disinfection systems offer efficient and effective disinfection of secondary and tertiary wastewater effluent. The revolutionary systems power traditional UV lamps with microwave energy, offering performance unseen in the industry to date. - TETRA® DeepBed™ tertiary filters are an economical solution for the removal of TSS <2 NTU or <5 mg/l TSS and < 0.2 mg/L phosphorus. - TETRA® LP Block™ lateral underdrains are ideal for pretreatment filtration at desalination plants. such as availability of the 'gallon' bottles/ containers, the pricing set by the CBOs, the water sales and the water production will influence income-generation. But with expenditure limited to caretaker salaries (around US$ 300 per month for two caretakers), consumables (filter cartridges etc) and electricity/fuel for generators, it is likely that the community based organisations will be able to make a significant net profit. With a net profit, the basis for sustainable future operation and maintenance has been established. The profit is deposited in the CBO's local bank account. n - UAT™ desalination systems are suitable for treating a wide range of salinity application up to 10+ MGD (1,500+ m3 polish RO permeate. /hr).
