LEADERS 2017 3 LEADERS 2017 COMMENT Published by Faversham House Windsor Court, Wood Street East Grinstead West Sussex RH19 1UZ T: 01342 332000 Maureen Gaines, Editor Editor Maureen Gaines maureengaines@fav-house.com Advertisement sales Tom Romer tomromer@fav-house.com Classifi ed sales Danielle Mason daniellemason@fav-house.com Production controller Sharon Miller sharonmiller@fav-house.com Publisher Angela Himus angelahimus@fav-house.com 'Despite the uncertainties, contractors and suppliers have got to get smart' W elcome to The LEADERS 2017, WET News' annual survey of the leading water industry contractors sent out in the July issues of WET News and sister journal Water & Wastewater Treatment. In this special supplement we uncover this year's Top 10 contractors based on turnover, net margin, return on capital, sales per employee, operating margin, and sales percentage change. It's great to hear contractors are • nally seeing increasing workloads having experienced a very slow start to AMP6. But as we rapidly approach the mid-way point in the current • ve-year regulatory cycle the industry it is safe to say that the industry is still a way o† from reaching the peak if the traditional roller-coaster ride associated with the AMP cycle. Hopefully, that is a good thing as contractors turn their attentions towards AMP7 and what that will bring. The slow start to AMP6 also means that a lot of late-start projects will continue into AMP7 when it arrives in April 2020. Inadvertently, it may be that this will bene• t the water industry's contractors and suppliers in that the the transition to AMP7 will be the smoothest it has ever been since privatisation nearly 30 years ago. The skills shortage remains high on the agenda as well, as most contractors cite this as being a major challenge moving forward, and especially as high pro• le projects, such as HS2, help drain the staŒ ng pool. The situation has been compounded by the uncertainties surround- ing Brexit, and accessing the pool of EU migrant workers. But despite all the uncertainties, one thing is for sure – the contrac- tors and the industry's suppliers have got to get smart. With regulators remaining focused on eŒ ciency, ever-improving customer service and demonstrable value for money, facilitating data and innovation across the industry is going to be key.
