12 Most Innovative Use of an Existing Technology Winner Aquabio and BW Products For the SandCycle, an IT-based smart monitoring tool for optimising the operation of MBFs. FINALIST: CDEnviro's S:MAX G has high-frequency screening that uses vibrations to move the screen through the sludge, breaking the surface tension and increases fl ow rates. FINALIST: Greener Waste Technology's BioTube is a small pipe-like device that is designed to release a small dose of activated bacteria into the effl uent using a unique 'living jelly'. FINALIST: IMGeospatial's Leak Canary is an innovative software programme that uses remotely-sensed earth observation data to identify where leakage is occurring in water supply pipelines. FINALIST: Nereda, launched commercially in the UK with Royal HaskoningDHV, harnesses the benefi ts of aerobic granular sludge technology. FINALIST: RS Hydro's ProteusBOD is a multiparameter water quality meter requiring almost no maintenance, nor solutions/reagents. FINALIST: Severn Trent and Aquacheck Engineering developed a new style of water fi lter that can be installed in a standard boundary box in the same way as a water meter. Winner Clearwater Controls For its Deragger II, a retro-fi t device for wastewater pumping stations that alleviates/eradicates ragging blockages. FINALIST: Affi nity Water has adopted the use of the Agilent Triple Quadrupole Gas Chromatographer Mass Spectrometer as an online metaldehyde monitor at its Hertfordshire treatment works. FINALIST: Anglian Water and Gutermann for the Zonescan Alpha, which has helped create the fi rst truly "Smart Water Network" in Newmarket. FINALIST: MWH Treatment designed and built a 10,000PE Pocket ASP plant treating crude sewage for Severn Trent at the Bakewell WwTW. FINALIST: Northumbrian Water Group and 1Spatial for the use of 1Integrate to map the utility's Transferred Drains and Sewers (TDS) network more quickly and at a lower cost. FINALIST: Servelec Technologies and D r Cymru Welsh Water identifi ed that FlowSure, a self-learning anomaly detection software, could be readily adapted for use on DCWW's wastewater network. FINALIST: Wessex Water and IKT GmbH for the use of the IKT MAC System for non-destructive assessment of the mechanical condition of man-entry masonry, concrete sewers, aqueducts and of the surrounding soil. FINALIST: Yorkshire Water is integrating Unmanned Aerial Vehicle technology into a business as usual process starting with visual asset inspections that would usually involve working at height. Most Innovative New Technology of the Year What the judges said: "The entry addresses a perennial industry problem, pump clogging. It applies technology to an area where it is notoriously diffi cult to innovate, and has apparently solved it. It's extraordinary that it can detect wet wipes on the pump impeller and respond to it." What the judges said: "This simple concept is a worthy winner as it uses low-tech, self-powering tags which provide plenty of useful information to the operator. A smart and neat solution."
