7 Sustainable Drainage & Flood Management Initiative of the Year Winner Northumbrian Water For the Brunton Park Estate scheme to tackle fl ooding from three sources – the river Ouseburn and the sewerage and surface water systems. Diverting the Ouseburn to create space for surface water storage enabled a cost-effective fl ood embankment to be constructed. FINALIST: Atkins and Anglian Water. Atkins' SuDS Studio tool was used to provide a better understanding of the surface water removal potential by implementing SuDS for the entire Anglian Water region. FINALIST: ICS Consulting and University of Exeter's Centre for Water Systems: Following on from the development of a generic 2D fl ood modelling tool (CADDIES), researchers from the University of Exeter's Centre for Water Systems teamed up with ICS to customise and integrate the tool within ICS' own Asset Data Management System to enable fast and accurate modelling and assessment of fl ood risk. FINALIST: RPS Group for its Post Graduate Certifi cate in Managing Urban Drainage is the fi rst academically accredited technical development programme within the urban drainage sector. FINALIST: Mott MacDonald for the £1.5M Rhiwbina Flood defence scheme, which enables surplus fl ow to be attenuated off-line and away from residential areas. The scheme aimed to reduce risk of fl ooding to the local area; downstream detriment and visual impact in the community. FINALIST: South West Water Delivery Alliance H5O: Countess Wear WwTW was constructed on marshland of the River Exe estuary fl oodplain. The project included the need to maintain serviceability under fl ood conditions or provide the ability to recover serviceability within two days of fl ood waters receding. FINALIST: South West Water Delivery Alliance H5O for the Maltsters Rising Main scheme. The Maltsters sewage pumping station rising main, situated on the Harbourne River, was identifi ed for improvement after seven bursts in two years. The team deviated from the original plan as the environmental impact to fi sh, migrating sea birds and marine life would have been signifi cant.
