For networks, the vast number of SMEs working on novel technologies and applications in areas as diverse as power cables and noise reduction represent a pool of potential innovation that just can't be replicated internally. For SMEs, the opportunity to trial and sell their work to a network can be the difference between success and failure. With this in mind, one might expect there to be a free flow of information between the two, with SMEs able to approach networks directly whenever they see the potential for their solu- tions to solve a problem. In reality, this is not the case. As with many other industries, enabling easy access for the small and agile companies op- erating in the energy sector into the big – and o‚en bureaucratic – networks is not as easy as both parties would hope.
