As part of a flagship £300 million
project to bring online an alternative
water supply for Birmingham, the
Elan Valley Aqueduct needs to be
upgraded in three places – but storage
limitations mean it can currently only
be shut down for a few days at a time.
To allow larger-scale upgrades to
take place, three huge bypass tunnels
will be dug so that water supplies can
be maintained while work goes on.
