utILIty WeeK | 10th - 16th February 2017 | 5 David Clarke, chief executive of the Energy Technologies Institute, has died. Chairman Sir Rob Margetts issued a statement saying: "We are shocked and deeply saddened at the passing of our chief executive Dr David Clarke. David was a leader, a colleague and a friend to us and we will miss him terribly. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family and we will do our best to ensure the legacy of the ETI is a fitting tribute to David, who has led the organisation with passion and integrity since its establishment." Sector skills strategy launched Industry leaders have come together to form the Energy & Utili- ties Skills Partnership and launch the sector's first joint Workforce Renewal and Skills Strategy. The strategy was launched on 9 February and seeks to address the challenges faced by firms that together will require 221,000 re- cruits by 2027 in order to continue providing essential services and deliver infrastructure plans. Setting out the need for the strat- egy, Nick Ellins, chief executive of Energy & Utility Skills, said: "The National Infrastructure Plan is now widely recognised as forming the backbone of industrial strategy, and more than half of that plan is required to be delivered by the power, water, gas, wastewater and waste management industries. To date, the accompanying infrastruc- ture skills strategy has not explicitly recognised this critical contribution or done enough to ensure that the businesses involved have the right environment to ensure a sustain- able and talented workforce exists." Southern Water boosts renewables with AD Southern Water has moved to reduce its carbon footprint by converting sewage into renewable energy, after waste specialists Veolia installed new combined heat and power (CHP) engines at treatment facilities in Hampshire and Kent. Southern Water generates 17 per cent of its electricity demand from 16 CHP sites. Upgrades to systems at Budds Farm, Fullerton and Gravesend have brought total renewable electricity generation to 48.3GWh across the sites. Veolia was responsible for the design, installation and operation of the biogas cogeneration units, which convert sewage from Southern Water's 39,000km of sewage networks into biogas using anaerobic digestion. Combined-cycle gas turbines and coal were the big winners in the auction, securing 22GW and 10.4GW (includ- ing biomass) respectively. The auction secured capacity for the coming winter (2017/18), meaning the bulk of capacity has now been procured for the next four winters.
