So when an urgent enquiry was received from a major water company su ering sewage failure, Sykes Pumps acted quickly to overcome the issue and prevent any serious long- term e ects. At the request of the client, Sykes technicians worked through the night mustering and checking equipment ahead of a rst light delivery on a crane lorry. Restricted access threatened to complicate matters, but a specialist vehicle eet comprising of 4x4 lorries ensured any potential di culties were overcome. By dawn, Sykes delivered two ATEX-rated XFP150M electric submersible pumps suitable for use in what was a hazardous Zone II environment. The pumps were rated at Sykes assist major water provider following sewage pumps failure When a well-known water company encountered issues with their sewage works, Sykes Pumps stepped in to avert trouble 75kW and 55kW and were provided with the associated variable speed drive control equipment, and high pressure hoses. Upon arrival, it became evident that additional drainage pumps would also be required to allow access for the installation of the wastewater pumps. Within two hours, Sykes Pumps had also delivered two additional drainage submersible pumps – a 9.4kW P3001 and a 22kW PX12. This quick response avoided possible sewage contamination which could have otherwise led to further pollution from the spread of disease-causing microbes. Speaking after the project's successful completion, the local Sykes hire manager received thanks from the customer and summarised: "It's what we do. In this business we must o er our customers peace of mind that we will always respond quickly and e ciently in their time of need. "It is therefore absolutely critical that our technicians are constantly available around the clock, in order to prevent the crippling disasters that have a habit of occurring outside normal working hours. "This scenario is a perfect example of swift reaction times helping to avoid a wider issue – something our engineers are extremely familiar with!" TAKING A GLANCE: 160 YEARS SYKES PUMPS 1857- 2017 Boiler hire solution keeps digester functional The average annual electricity bill for a water treatment site is around £1million, representing one of the largest outlays for companies operating in this eld. They are therefore naturally interested in o setting this cost and can do this by generating their own electricity via anaerobic digestion. This process involves heating sludge to encourage bacteria consumption before creating a biogas that converts heat into electricity. So when one of the UK's most prominent water rms encountered a problem with one of their boilers, a replacement was required immediately to ensure the digester's continued functionality. Without this, the system could not work at full capacity and this meant that sludge was too cold to produce gas. This in turn led to a backlog of sludge that could not be processed, but there was no scope for storing additional quantities or transporting it to other sites. An Andrews Boiler Hire technician visited the site to help propose a solution which involved recommending the hire of a 500kW boiler and nding a suitable place to position it. This was then connected to the client's ow and return via PN16 anges and heated the sludge at temperatures greater than 32°C. By delivering substitute equipment within a few hours of the initial enquiry, Andrews Sykes helped a major customer sustain an electricity conversion process without any lengthy delays.
