The saving is equivalent to planting 9,246 trees and is already 40 tonnes more than predicted for the full year. £2.3bn The amount of extra annual GVA which could be created by the Northern energy economy by 2050, according to a KPMG- Northern Gas Networks report. £9.5m The amount British Gas Business has agreed to pay to customers following a billing system debacle. £500 The top prize in five awards being made available by United Utilities for local groups that tackle loneliness and conduct community outreach across Cumbria, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside. Co-operative Energy chief executive Co-operative Energy has appointed David Bird as its chief executive. He joins the energy company from Eon where he is currently managing director of its UK residential and metering business. He takes up his post on 24 April. Orchard Energy MD Orchard Energy has appointed Amar Hussain as managing director. He succeeds Orchard Energy founder Gareth Henderson. Hussain steps into the position from his current role as Orchard's commercial director. APPOINTMENTS Carbon monoxide charity fund The UK's gas distribution network operators have launched a fund to support innovation in awareness-raising and risk mitiga- tion of carbon monoxide poisoning. UK charities have been invited to apply for grants from the fund to boost their work on these issues. Grants of up to £2,000 will be made available. WWU smart meter win Gas distribution network opera- tor Wales and West Utilities (WWU) has won a contract to install 10,000 dual fuel smart meters across Wales and the southwest of England for National Grid Smart (NGS) limited. The GDN has worked with NGS on metering contracts for a decade but this is the first time it will install electricity meters. The contract was awarded after a tender. GAS ENERGY More than 1GW of demand-side response (DSR) has been con- tracted into the capacity market for delivery up to 2020 at a cost of £24.65 million, according to National Grid's Power Re- sponsive annual report. A further 1.4GW of DSR was awarded contracts in the most recent auction in December 2016.
