Water. desalination + reuse December 2016 The Quarterly 5 ITALY Culligan introduces RO and MBR systems Italian water treatment fi rm Culligan has introduced a new skid-mounted seawater RO desalination solution, SW Evo, and a containerised membrane bio reactor system. The SW Evo can produce 480 m3/d of fresh water from feed waters with up to 42,000ppm of salinity, and uses an average of 2kWh/m3 of energy by employing the latest energy recovery technology. The membrane bioreactor system combines activated sludge treatment with solids- liquids separation by way of membranes, reducing the footprint by up to 50 per cent over conventional activated sludge systems. EUROPE Europe gets new water reuse agency A new industry body, Water Reuse Europe, is to promote the use of European products, services, and expertise for water reuse projects worldwide. The European Union-backed non-profi t will off er a range of services to commercial and public organisations, support sharing of best practice, and develop a single voice on public aff airs. Its mission is "to create a collective identity for the European water reuse sector, and to promote an innovative and dynamic industry". The new organisation's board of directors is chaired by Paul Jeff rey, professor of water management at Cranfi eld Water Science Institute, Cranfi eld University. AUSTRALIA Infrastructure fund buys VDP stake Investment house AMP Capital has acquired a 5.2 per cent stake in the Victorian Desalination Plant (VDP), Australia, from Pacifi c Partnerships. Pacifi c Partnerships is the project fi nance arm of CIMIC Group, an infrastructure project developer which owns Thiess, whose joint venture with Degrémont designed and built the VDP. AMP Capital investment house focuses on real estate and infrastructure, and bought the holding through its Community Infrastructure Fund (CommIF). "This asset delivers stable, long-term monthly service payments from the Victorian government to our investors," said CommIF manager Andrea McElhinney. NORTH AMERICA GE reuse solutions installed at Canada refi nery GE is supplying water recycling technology to the Co-op Refi nery Complex in Regina, Saskatchewan province, Canada, a er new rules mandated that the refi nery fi nd a new water source. The facility expanded from 100,000 to 130,000 barrels of oil per day three years ago, resulting in its existing sources of well water and city water not stretching far enough. The solution provided by GE combines its ZeeWeed membrane bioreactor system, and its high- effi ciency reverse osmosis system, HERO, to reuse two million gallons of wastewater a day. Regina's Co-op Refi nery Complex will be the fi rst petroleum refi nery in North America to recycle 100 per cent of its wastewater, producing steam for heating, hydrogen production, and to power equipment and cooling towers. FRANCE IDA celebrates water reuse awards The IDA unveiled the winners of its inaugural Water Reuse and Conservation Awards, at its International Conference on Water Reuse and Recycling in Nice, France, in September. Dr Masaru Kurihara (second from le , above), fellow at Toray Industries, and senior scientifi c director of the Mega-ton Water System project, won the award for Outstanding Professional in Water Reuse and Conservation, and Neal Chung, professor at National University of Singapore, and Roberto Mazzini of Veolia Water Technologies Italia, were recognised with distinction in the category. Orange County Water District scooped the award for Exceptional Utility Leader in Water Reuse and Conservation; Suez, France, was awarded with distinction, and Water Corporation, Australia, won a merit award in the category. The third award, Industry Technology and Innovation Leader in Water Reuse and Conservation, went to Veolia Water Technologies, France; and Desalitech, USA, was awarded with distinction, and Dow Water & Process Solutions, USA, won a merit award.
