30 ALLIANCES 2017 FLO, BMB and CVB are the three consortia building London's £4.2bn super sewer. The three joint ventures are mobilising their teams to start work, with construction due to start next year and completion scheduled for 2023. Construction is split into three packages. Central is the project for FLO (Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O'Rourke Construction); West is the responsibility for BMB [BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty); and East, which has gone to CVB (Costain, Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche). Tideway expects the first of its tunnelling machines to arrive on site in May, in preparation for when the sha"s have been dug for the Thames Tideway Tunnel. There are four tunnelling machines in the main tunnel drive. Tideway chief executive Andy Mitchell said: "We expect the first tunnelling machine to arrive in May next year. The first machine, which will be in the Fulham location of Carnwath Road, should start tunnelling by autumn of next year. That's when we become really visible." The Thames Tideway Tunnel will intercept sewage from the 34 most polluting CSOs, including at Blackfriars, before transferring it to Thames Water's Beckton Sewage Treatment Works. During construction Tideway is aiming to transport 90% of spoil from the main tunnel by river, drastically cutting down on the number of lorry trips that would otherwise be needed. Preliminary construction was due to start at the end of October, with tunnelling expected to start in 2017 and end in 2021, commissioning in 2022, and all works to be completed by 2023. However, Tideway is aiming to reduce the delivery timetable for its £4.2 billion super sewer by up to two years.
