ALLIANCES 2017 23 CABV was formed recently when Black & Veatch joined the existing partnership between Costain and Atkins, one of the two design-build joint ventures working within Thames Water's eight2O alliance. The newly-formed alliance is executing asset creation and optimisation projects across Thames Water's region in London and the Thames Valley. The CABV joint venture is involved in every element – design, construction and commissioning – of new water and wastewater treatment and carriage assets for Thames Water. In addition, it is responsible for optimising the performance of new and existing assets. Black & Veatch will support these activities with real-time data analysis achieved using the company's ASSET360 tool. Scott Aitken, managing director, Black & Veatch CiM6, the Costain Integrated and MWH alliance has successfully delivered its first AMP6 project for Severn Trent Water (STW). The CiM6 team, based at Longbridge near Warwick, has already begun commissioning the upgraded Wootton Wawen wastewater treatment works in Warwickshire. The upgrade ensures the works meet the Europe, said: "By providing expertise and tools for gathering and analysing data in real time we help support data and insight- driven service improvements that benefit Thames Water's customers. Costain and Atkins have worked within eight2O since the Thames Water alliance's conception. The two companies originally partnered Veolia, creating the CVA venture. new standards on phosphates removal required by the Water Framework Directive. The project involved the design, procurement, construction and commissioning of a new ferrous chloride chemical dosing plant, along with a drainage pumping station and bunded area for tanker deliveries. However, at the end of the 18-month Early Contractor Involvement phase Veolia walked away from the joint venture having decided to focus on optimising existing assets rather than design and build. Until now, that had left Costain and Atkins to carry on as a twosome to help deliver billions of pounds of essential improvements to Thames Water's ageing network over the AMP6 period. "STW set the challenge of delivering even greater efficiencies in AMP6 equalling a 20% saving over identical AMP5 projects," said Scott Hughes, Costain whole life project manager. "To meet this tough challenge, new project delivery models and strategies were developed during the last year of AMP5 comprising collaborative planning and production control, factory thinking and design for off-site manufacture, standard products and batching. We set ourselves a target reduction of 30% faster in the STW project delivery end-to-end process (E2E), which includes client gateway governance, feasibility, outline design, detailed design, construction and commissioning." The faster target has been achieved through employing leading strategies such as off-site manufacture and using standard products.
