ALLIANCES 2017 19 BNM Alliance, comprising Barhale and NMCNomenca, has added the £60M Newark pipes scheme to its portfolio of work for Severn Trent Water, which already includes the Elan Valley Aqueduct tunnelling and pipeline projects. The Newark scheme is designed to help protect homes from sewer flooding, and ensure a reliable future water supply for the town. As part of the three-year project, BNM Alliance is replacing more than 20km of pipes including a 2.8m diameter tunnel travelling beneath Newark's streets. The EVA scheme involves BNM delivering three tunnelling projects and one pipeline project. The contract is part of Severn Trent's overall Strategic Resilience Plan to secure Birmingham's water supply for the next century. The alliance has completed more than 110m of construction completed. C 2 V+ is one of four Construction Delivery Partners (CDPs) appointed to carry out United Utilities' (UU) AMP6 capital delivery programme. The CH2M / VolkerStevin joint venture is providing the full spectrum of works for both water and wastewater across the North-west. Projects it is working on include the £14.5M upgrade at Chorley Wastewater Treatment Works, and the £43m design and build water treatment works scheme in When finished, the newly constructed tunnel will reach 1.8km in length and will replace part of the existing aqueduct. The 240m access road off the A488 has been completed, with 25,000m3 of rock and soil moved in a cut-and-fill design to provide the level working area required by the team The southern edge of the working area required a 14m high elevation which has seen a vast retaining wall built from reinforced soil in Oswestry, Shropshire. It has also completed UU's £4.5M scheme to help improve bathing waters at Allonby, on Cumbria's Solway coastline. The Chorley scheme is progressing well, and will ensure compliance with the Bathing Water and Shellfish Directive by limiting storm spills into the nearby watercourse. However, C2V+ framework director Darren Hynes said it is challenging "with a huge amount of work to be done to meet the 45 engineered layers. The EVA is more than 73 miles long, and delivers 300 million-plus litres of water each day to Frankley Water Treatment works on the outskirts of Birmingham, serving 1.2 million customers in Birmingham and surrounding areas. It was built more than 100 years ago to serve a growing population in the city. The proactive maintenance programme of works will take four years to complete. regulatory date of April 17". A key milestone on the project was reached recently as 50 members of the JV's workforce worked 18 consecutive hours to enable a continuous concrete pour The task, which began in the early hours of the morning, lays the foundations for the new 43m diameter settlement tanks. Hynes said the project requires a lot of expertise and precision to ensure no impact to the existing operational works whilst the reconstruction is carried out. Commenting on the completed Allonby scheme, Hynes, said: "The works will reduce spills of untreated sewage and improve the quality of the treated wastewater which is returned to the sea Previously, the Environment Agency rated the bathing water around Allonby as poor so this will be a fantastic improvement for the community."
