SEPTEMBER 2016 WET NEWS 3 U napproved products are being discovered on water treatment projects nationwide in a bid to meet ever stringent budgets, new research from plastic pipe manufacturer Durapipe UK has revealed. According to the research 43% of the contractors, consultants and end users questioned said they have retrospectively discovered that products which do not hold the relevant industry approvals have been installed on industrial projects. Half of these admitted leaving the products in operation as they were performing to expectation at the time, while the other half replaced the system with approved products, o• en at the cost of the contractor. The survey results reveal 45% of current pipework applications for industrial projects are speci€ ed based on industry approvals. However, Durapipe said it is worrying that half of those questioned are yet to realise the importance of product approvals. With budgets being S kanska UK has become one of the € rst construction companies to introduce an insurance-approved supply chain framework that will facilitate the wider deployment of drone technology on projects. Remotely piloted aircra• systems (RPAS), better known as drones, o‰ er an innovative way of capturing data that can signi€ cantly reduce risk and create opportunities for more e‰ ective delivery. The framework comprises three carefully selected and veri€ ed companies – Resource Group, Skycap and Cambridge Almost half of water treatment schemes use unapproved products increasingly squeezed and scrutinised in the water sector, Durapipe said price seems to be winning over quality, safety and performance as nearly half of those questioned (46%) divulged they would consider installing an unapproved product if it was more cost- e‰ ective than an approved alternative. This is potentially risking the quality and integrity of the media and its systems so installers working with unapproved products need to be ready to accept the consequences. Commenting on the latest research, Durapipe industrial brand manager Rich Pedley said: "This new research is extremely worrying. Not all applications are governed by approvals, but there are certain instances, such as products that come into contact with drinking water, that must adhere to the strict UK guidelines that are in place. "Products that carry the necessary industry approvals represent a quality solution that is € t for purpose and installing WET News is registered at Stationers' Hall.
