Now, utilities are going back to school with a vengeance and the autumn holds a challenging curriculum. Here's what Utility Week is looking forward to: 1. Smart systems call for evidence: In early September the Depart- ment for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, in partnership with Ofgem, will issue a call for evidence in response to its investiga- tion of smart energy system requirements. The work began under the rule of Decc and will set out some critical thinking on the develop- ment of markets for new technologies such as energy storage, as well as evolving roles for energy aggregators. Importantly, the call will also reveal ideas about the future of power distribution and the scope for new roles and responsibilities at this level, including local balancing and system operation. 2. Shadow market opening: It's been a bumpy ride for the water sector since the government's intention to open the non-domestic market to competition was set out in the Water Act 2014. The market operator has been overhauled twice and there have been shock mar- ket exits from big incumbents Southern and Thames. Now, though, the sector is on the brink of competition. Shadow market opening in October will see the systems which have been so painstakingly devised over the past two-and-half years put through their paces following a big data upload. 3. Implementation of the CMA's remedies: Love 'em or hate 'em, the CMA's remedies for the energy supply market were set out with finality in June and now their implementation must forge ahead. This won't always be easy. In particular, Ofgem will have a job on its hands to set up a secure database for "sticky" customer details, which allows suppliers to market, but not to harass customers. 4. A decision on Hinkley Point C: The government caused a hul- labaloo in July when it deflated EDF's long-awaited final investment decision on Hinkley Point C with a further delay to the troubled new nuclear project. It promised to reveal its reasoning, and a final deci- sion, in September. We wait with baited breath. • Looking beyond the autumn and into winter, don't miss out on  the chance to be recognised at the Utility Week Awards in December. Deadline for entry is 9 September.
