'Despite e orts to smooth the peaks and troughs, it's the same old story' W elcome to The Leaders 2016, WET News' annual survey of the leading water industry contractors sent out in the May issue of WET News and the June edition of sister journal Water & Wastewater Treatment. In this special supplement we uncover this year's Top 10 contractors based on turnover, net margin, return on capital, sales per employee, operating margin and sales percentage change. The past year has been an interesting one for water sector contractors – but not for the right reasons. Despite all the best e• orts and hard work that went on behind the scenes to smooth out the peaks and troughs of the AMP cycle, for many it's been the same old story. Strangely, no-one is able to identify what went wrong because so many factors – totex adoption, ODIs, water company restructures, changes in business models to name a few – have all played their part in what is being described as "the worst start to an AMP cycle since privatisation". Some contractors are starting to see improvement as AMP6 progresses into year two but there is a feeling they now have to cram a ‰ ve-year capital delivery programme into four years – or less. As a result, greater importance is being placed on one-o• projects. There is some good news, though, especially for those companies who missed out on frameworks for AMP6. Severn Trent Water, South West Water and Yorkshire Water will be coming to market with their AMP7 capital delivery programmes. It seems that MEICA (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls and Automation) is becoming a useful string to contractors' bows. With delivery programmes including more capital maintenance, MEICA services are growing in demand. Some contractors are already jumping on the MEICA services bandwagon. Others may wish to do the same – if they are not to be le' behind.
