Air Valves for Desalination - a Solution for Carlsbad, California Planners and designers of the large desalination facility in Carlsbad, California required a solution for the phenomenon of negative pressure (vacuum). They also had to deal with the demands for major energy cost savings necessary to operate the facility. A.R.I. engineers analyzed the facility data and proposed a solution that increased the efficiency of the water supply system. A.R.I. supplied air valves to Carlsbad that were designed to protect the pipelines, membranes and accessories from negative pressure. Their locations were determined to provide optimal use of the energy resources. The products were also designed to work with lower pressures and were manufactured from composite materials such as nylon and polypropylene and metals such as stainless steel 316 and duplex 5A.
