May-June 2016 | Desalination & Water Reuse | 13 | BUSINESS H2O Innovation said Mexico's US$ 32 billion National Infrastructure Plan will enable H2O Innovación Mexico to set itself up in the country through new projects and operation and maintenance contracts. H2O Innovación Mexico's operations will be based in Monterrey, Canada with regional offices in Cancun and Cabo. VEolIa IN mINEral rEcoVEry partNErShIp at INlaNd dESalINatIoN plaNt Texas-based company, Enviro Water Minerals (EWM), is to deploy its novel mineral recovery technology in a partnership with water and waste giant, Veolia, to produce potable water from brackish water desalination effluent. EWM will use its pre-commercial mineral recovery technology in a wastewater treatment plant drawing on effluent from the adjacent Kay Bailey Hutchison (KBH) plant near El Paso, Texas - the world's largest inland desalination facility. The zero-discharge EWM plant will recover contaminant minerals from the waste brine concentrate from the KBH reverse osmosis process and transfer them into commercial products while producing potable water at 2 Ml/d for the city of El Paso. It is scheduled to begin operations in early 2017. EWM has awarded a 10-year operations and maintenance deal to Veolia. The companies said the new plant is the first of its kind. In a statement, EWM chief executive, Hubble Hausman, said: "Waste brine disposal has long been the Achilles' heel of inland desalination facilities. Our El Paso project will demonstrate that it is possible to produce multiple marketable chemical and mineral products from the waste brine while increasing the recovery of potable water and eliminating waste." prIVatE playErS arE rEShapINg dESalINatIoN SayS rEport Private water companies are "reshaping global desalination" with nine of the top ten capacity additions in 2015 coming from private sector players according to market researcher Bluefield Research. On commissioning its Carlsbad plant in California, Poseidon Resources joined the global top 25 private players making it the first US member of the capacity leaders according to Bluefield. "Poseidon's new position highlights the role of private players in desalination particularly as governments and utilities seek strategies to minimize the impact of diminishing water supplies," said Bluefield president, Reese Tisdale. While the lion's share of desalination development activity is in the Middle East-North Africa region, key players will use desalination to grow their capacity in various areas of high activity including Chile, Mexico, India, and Singapore, said Bluefield. "Competition for new plant additions is intense. There are so few large- scale water projects being tendered at any given time."
