"Before email fi rst came into our industry there had been a discipline around the drawings, how they were labelled, how they were transmi ed. With email we got into some really bad habits where before you know it you've got a thousand and one diff erent versions of that par cular bit of informa on." Cowell con nues: "BIM applied correctly will reintroduce some of that discipline. One of the things that you hear in the BIM world is 'one version of the truth' and it reintroduces that discipline which engineers understand and value. I think that's one of the reasons and it also enables engineers to do some really exci ng things." Cowell is engineering director at MWH, and chair of BIM4Water. He will be chairing a session in the U lity Week Live Water Theatre on May 18 exploring the challenges and opportuni es facing the water sector, and asking how BIM can benefi t delivery processes. In addi on to reinvigora ng engineering BIM's advantages – off site manufacturing, eff ec ve standardisa on, asset life cycle informa on management and understanding whole life costs – are well documented but it is also making the virtual reality. Cowell fi rmly believes that BIM has huge poten al to increase effi ciency and customer service, although there is a need to share informa on and to consider adop ng common and open industry standards.
