3 Desalination & Water Reuse Directory 2016 www.desalination.biz COMMENT & CONTENTS • Moral guidance Ten years ago the world's most arid populated nation built its first seawater desalination plant. Since the day in 2006 when purified water started to flow from the desalination plant at Perth, Australia, the Emu Downs wind farm has supplied the plant's owner with electricity to fully offset its demand. •is arguably makes the facility the world's largest renewably powered desalination plant. Yet less than 1% of the world's desalination is powered by renewable energy sources today. •at is a statistic that is unlikely to remain in single digit territory for too much longer. •e importance of coupling desalination and water reuse to conservation as well as renewable and other sustainable energy sources, was a strong motif in speeches at the IDA's World Congress last autumn which carried the strap line: Renewable water resources to meet global needs. Speaking at the Congress, Saudi Arabia's minister of water and electricity, Abdullah Al-Hussain, warned of an over-reliance on desalting at the expense of conservation: "Our product is still far too expensive to make a difference where it counts," he told the meeting. He noted that the 27% savings in water consumption made in San Diego under a state mandate was the equivalent of 40 desalination plants the size of the US$ 1 billion, 250Ml/d Carlsbad facility, just starting up down the road from the Congress venue in San Diego. •is was just one of a salvo of rallying calls in recent months for greater sustainability in the world's production of water from new sources. •ere is a burgeoning emphasis in the industry on sustainability, driven by improving technology and placing water reuse at the centre. Global growth in renewable-fired desalination and water reuse is in the foothills of a steep ascent in the coming year. •e talisman could well be the five industry heavyweights competing to produce commercially meaningful, large solar-powered desalination plants at Abu Dhabi's Masdar Institute and with some encouraging early results. •e will is there, the opportunities are there and the technology is coming. What's more, the technological gains in membrane design and chemistry are closing in on dramatic efficiency gains and upping the capacity to handle challenging influent. •ese, along with financing innovations, are the sorts of developments that could bring desalination and water reuse to regions lacking the economic muscle to tackle water scarcity. New IDA president Emilio Gabbrielli included in his ambitions greater influence for the industry in regions including sub-Saharan Africa, central Asia and Latin America. •ese regions are homes to most of the globe's billion people living without access to clean water. Given the fundamental importance of water and the sheer enormity of the issues arising from its scarcity, there's a huge moral imperative on the water purification industry in all its forms to produce the goods. And there are also truly massive business opportunities. •ere's a lot of talk about a revival in the fortunes of desalination and water reuse. We are probably edging more to a transformation in its technology and the economics. •e developments noted here are snapshots from the mix of technology, business, research and legislation in the global desalination and reuse sector. Desalination & Water Reuse, the magazine of the International Desalination Association, provides a quarterly overview of the industry backed up by day-to-day coverage in its website www.desalination.biz. •e Desalination & Water Reuse Directory 2016, and its online Suppliers Directory, keeps readers informed about the industry players and the products and services they provide for desalination and water reuse worldwide.
