APRIL2016 WET NEWS 3 W ater companies must "lead the way" in taking action to ensure long-term resilience of the sector, to avoid a potential gap between demand for water and available supplies, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural A• airs (Defra) has insisted. Climate change and population growth are putting increasing pressure on the water sector, and it must adapt to ensure it can continue to meet the needs of people, businesses and the environment. Water companies currently determine how to balance supply and demand over a minimum of 25 years through the water resources management planning process. In a recently published paper, Defra argued that although this planning framework has helped water companies maintain the balance of supply and demand within their boundaries, it has not "fundamentally increased" the resilience of water supplies in parts of the country or driven a step change in how water is traded between regions. The paper pointed out that the risks from water scarcity vary considerably between water businesses, and depend on how much water they are able to access, how much water their business will need in future, what options they have to meet that need, and the capacity they have to adapt to reduced water availability. "Without a step change in our national approach, lack of access to adequate water supplies could lead to some W ater and wastewater engineering consul- tancy FBW Engineer- ing Services has concluded a management buy-out (MBO) which is intended to secure the long-term future of the busi- ness. Recently appointed direc- tors Ian Hampson and Mike Dawber have led the buy-out at the Cheshire-base Š rm, which achieved a record turnover of £2M in 2015. Since its formation in 1995, the company Water rms urged to 'take action' to prevent ture supply gap businesses being unable to operate while farmers and growers could lose crops or have lower quality crops," it argued, adding that if enough power stations had to reduce operations due to lack of cooling water, this could a• ect the national grid, particularly if other generation sources were unavailable. "We want to see the sector work with customers, partners and regulators to develop a strong understanding of future needs, explore every option to meet these needs, and build consensus on their plans for delivery," it said. It added that, outside of the public water supply, businesses must "assess and manage" their resilience risks and come together to Š nd the best way to meet their needs.
