UTILITY WEEK | 1ST - 7TH APRIL 2016 | 5 Scottish Power's Longannet power station in Fife switched off the last of its four generating units for the final time last week, ending coal-fired electricity production in Scotland. Longannet was the third largest coal-fired power plant in Europe and came online in 1969 with a capacity of 2,400MW. Scottish Power generation director Hugh Finlay said: "Longannet has contributed more electricity for National Grid than any other power station in Scotland's history, and it is a sad day for everyone at Scottish Power." £3m National Grid agreed to pay £3 million to fuel poverty charity National Energy Action after fail- ing to meet its gas repair targets "I say clearly and categorically that Hinkley Point C will go ahead" EDF Energy chief executive Vincent de Rivaz, appearing before a meeting of the Energy and Climate Change Committee Aberdeen has announced plans to drill a deep geo- thermal well beneath the city to generate heat from the granite rocks. A government-funded report said the levelised cost of the technology over a 20-year period (2015 to 2035) is expected to increase little compared with the costs of producing heat from other technologies. This is due to the anticipated rise in the cost of fuel required for the alternative technologies. WWF Scotland director Lang Banks said: "To help unlock the potential of technologies such as geothermal or district heating, we call upon all political parties to commit to a Warm Homes Act to unlock clean and affordable warmth."
