UTILITY WEEK | 11TH - 17TH MARCH 2016 | 5 United Utilities has started work on an £80 million project at Oldham Wastewater Treatment Works in a bid to improve water quality in the River Irk and meet the standards of the Water Framework Directive. The project will involve decommissioning part of the sewage works and the building of a new sewer pipeline between the two treatment works. The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has released a report detailing how infra- structure and policies to pro- mote interconnection, storage and demand flexibility could create a more efficient and cheaper electricity system. The NIC said its main finding is that three innovations in particular – interconnection, energy storage, and demand-side response – would help fire a "smart power revolution", which could save consumers up to £8 billion a year by 2030. 'Interconnectors, storage and DSR' EDF finance chief quits over Hinkley EDF's chief financial officer Thomas Piquemal has quit the company over whether or not to press ahead with a final investment decision on Hin- kley Point C, according to reports. Sources quoted in the Financial Times said Piquemal had met with EDF's chief executive Jean-Bernard Levy several times last week to argue for a three-year delay to the decision. Levy reportedly said it should instead take place as early as next month. EDF has not commented on the reasons for the departure. Horizon names new CEO Duncan Hawthorne has been named chief executive of Hitachi subsidiary Horizon Nuclear Power, effective 1 May. He joins Horizon after a 15-year period as president and chief exec- utive of Canadian power firm Bruce Power, which operates one of the world's largest nuclear facilities. He has held a range of positions in the nuclear industry, including chair of the World Association of Nuclear Operators, and has been on the Horizon board since 2013. British Water chief steps down Ashley Roe is standing down as chief execu- tive of British Water after 15 years at the organisation. Lloyd Martin, chair of the British Water International Forum, will take over as interim chief executive until a permanent replacement is found. British Water has also announced the appointment of former United Utilities executive director Tony Conway to its board.
