Along with updates to the NanoH2O reverse osmosis product line the new features in version 2.3.2 include two added feedwater sources. They are tertiary-treated waste from microfiltration / ultrafiltration and conventionally treated tertiary waste sources. They include also automatic adjustment of flow loss and salt passage increase with each feedwater selection. GE upGRADEs ANALyTIcs GE has upgraded its InSight Analytics platform which it says enables reverse osmosis (RO) membrane operators to manage membrane cleaning schedules to optimize energy efficiency and membrane life. GE said the latest InSight products deployed the predictive analytics capability of the company's original InSight platform to collect performance data to enable operators to resolve critical issues, prevent problems before they occur, optimize operations and make strategic decisions. GE said InSight could improve system efficiency, cut operating costs and optimize production. "InSight Analytics for RO will help operators get the most out of their membranes through better management of their membrane cleaning schedules," said GE. According to GE, InSight Analytics for condenser efficiency increased reliability and transparency in measuring condenser efficiency in heat transfer systems. This offered real-time data normalization even during peak production times, in a clear, simplified report said GE. ADIoNIcs sALT ExTRAcTIoN pINpoINTs IoNs Salt extraction technology specialist, Adionics, has launched a selective ion extraction method for water deionization. The technology, dubbed Selectex, is able to extract up to three metal ions – typically from sodium, potassium, calcium, strontium or barium – as neutral salts in line with a given specification leaving other ions in the treated water. The first pilots are scheduled for implementation in the field this year. Selectex is a derivation of Adionics' AquaOmnes technology which removes salts from saline water by extraction into a proprietary fluid. Adionics claims it can extract salts at any salinity without being limited by a scaling concentration. KocH LATEsT MBR ups EffIcIENcy AND cuTs ENERGy cosTs Membrane manufacturer, Koch Membrane Systems (KMS) has launched a new membrane bioreactor (MBR) in its Puron range which it claims reduces long-term operating costs through greater efficiency and a smaller footprint. The Pulsion MBR's high efficiency arises from air and aeration energy requirements that are lower than those of conventional air scour methods, said Koch. The device "pulses a large bubble through a chambered fibre bundle to give a highly efficient pumping action" Koch said. "Improved recirculation of mixed liquor within the membrane module, not only results in lowered air requirements, but also boosts achievable fluxes. Coupling greater productivity with an increase in packing density allows the overall system footprint to be significantly reduced," Koch said. The company said Pulsion's operation on a continuous air supply eliminates the need for air cycle valves. And a continuous flow instead of high airflows applied cyclically halves the size of the air delivery equipment. "The energy efficiency and reduced footprint of our Pulsion MBR gives us the opportunity to offer the proven performance of the Puron single header design, reinforced polyvinylidene fluoride membrane, and central aeration to new and existing applications for a comparable cost of ownership to conventional wastewater plants," said KMS senior vice president of technology, Manny Singh. MyRoN L's uLTRApEN DRAWs THE pREcIsE cHLoRINE LINE Myron L has launched a "ground breaking, new pocket tester for measuring free chlorine disinfecting power, free chlorine equivalent as well as temperature," for use in various applications including reverse osmosis. The waterproof Ultrapen PT4's "fast and simple features to use in diverse water quality applications" include: • accuracy of up to ±0.3 parts per million free chlorine equivalent (FCE); • proprietary sensor design; • calibration with pH and ORP standard solutions; and • automatic temperature compensation. The pen's new FCE function gives free available chlorine (FAC) levels cross referenced with pH. It detects the FAC by measuring the oxidation-reduction potential – effectively the disinfectant capacity of the chlorine. While diethyl-para-phenylenediamine kits and colorimeters measure FAC of a test tube sample, the chemistry of the sample is quite different from the source water said Myron L. This, the company claimed, gives an imprecise indication of actual disinfection power. It asserted that its FCE function measures "the real, unaltered chemistry of source water, including moment-to-moment changes in that chemistry." coNWED Is fIfTy Plastic netting manufacturing giant, Conwed, hits its half century this year. Minneapolis-based Conwed has, since its launch in 1966, developed netting solutions for industrial and consumer products worldwide including in recent years, desalination membranes. Conwed plans to communicate its collaborative approach and "thirst for innovation" in a campaign titled: Celebrating our Past, Engineering our Future. During the rapid growth in its first three decades of existence, Conwed introduced reinforcement netting to bedding products, became essential in reinforcing carpet cushion and provided separation, containment and support to diverse air and liquid filtration products. In the past ten years, Conwed has expanded into many other areas including reverse osmosis feed spacers and high-temperature netting for automotive, oil, hydraulic and liquid filtration applications. Last year it added to its reverse osmosis membrane product line. "Our netting innovation relies heavily on our customers' product development needs. We pride ourselves on customizing each netting design to the point where we rarely have an off-the-shelf netting solution for our customers, said Conwed's strategic marketing manager, Ivan Soltero.
