DECEMBER 2015 WET NEWS 3 T rade body British Water has teamed up with other water industry associa- tions to establish a Europe-wide system of testing materials in contact with drinking water. British Water, working with the Industry Consortium for Products in Contact with Drink- ing Water (ICPCDW) wants to establish universal standards and certi• cation across Europe. The consortium is expected to release a set of dra- guidelines on plastics used to make water pipes by the end of the year. A working group is currently being created to look at regulations relating to the use of elastomers and the consortium is actively looking M orrison Utility Ser- vices is trialling Google's new Project Tango So- ware Development Kit (SDK) to explore new applications for the utility sector. The Project Tango SDK is an android tablet featuring a wide-angle camera, a depth sensing camera, accurate sensor time stamping, and a so- ware stack. It will enable Morrison US developers to use motion tracking, area learning and depth sensing. By combining motion and depth sensors, Google created a device that can understand European standard sought for drinking water products ‰ Trade bodies join forces to harmonise testing standards across Europe. Draft guidelines to be launched soon. for experts in this • eld from around Europe. Convenor of ICPCDW Tony Frost said that many of the EU states have their own certi• cation requirements, and manufacturers have to obtain certi• cation from each of the relevant member in order to obtain approval for selling products which come into contact with drinking water. "Testing is very expensive and very time consuming," he added. "It is a barrier to trade because it means if a product has been approved for use in the UK you can't sell it in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy or France – because they all have their own testing regimes. Morrison US trials Google's Project Tango how it is moving within its environment, giving it a human-scale understanding of space and motion. The device can also assess areas based on visual cues to further improve location accuracy. Morrison US said its business process and systems team will look into using Project Tango for 3D scanning applications that will enable excavation dimensions and volumes to be calculated more accurately, rather than using estimates based on length, width and depth measurements. The device can help with motion tracking, area learning and depth sensing member states which have di– erent certi• cation require- ments. It stymies product development, stymies innova- tion, and at the end of the day the consumer ends up paying." British Water chief executive Ashley Roe said: "The lack of a harmonised set of standards across Europe is a signi• cant barrier to trade and British Water will support e– orts to harmonise testing regulations and make it easier for UK manufacturers to trade with other companies in Europe. "People within the industry have wanted to see a standard regulatory system for some time and British Water is delighted progress is being made on this issue."
