DECEMBER 2015 WET NEWS 19 A solution: Lining pipe interiors Lead pipe restoration drastically reduced lead levels at a childrens' charity. S pecially developed 'no dig' technology reduces the risk of lead dissolving into the water supply in older build- ings and homes by restoring rather than replacing lead pipes, using an epoxy coating to line the interior of water pipes. ePIPE technology from Pipe Restoration Services (PRS) is a cost-effective alternative as disruption to existing plumbing can be kept to a minimum, cutting the time and cost involved. The ePIPE process uses a lining material with a short two-hour cure time, one of the fastest in the industry, resulting in a quick return to normal service and little disruption. Special adaptors for internal and external stop taps provide access to the ends of the pipe without the need to cut into it. The ePIPE coating goes beyond legal lead limits a€er application and is the first lining material and process of its kind to meet the stringent requirements of both the Water Regulatory Advisory Scheme (WRAS) and the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) for use of in all public water supplies. Approval means the lining process can be used on any water company or privately- owned water services and internal pipework to address lead contamination issues and repair leaks. Tony Hanks, from PRS, says: "The problem of lead in water has not gone away and the recommended solutions are too costly and disruptive. Our goal is to tackle the issue head on and go beyond lead compliance. We can offer property owners a longer term, more sustainable, solution than either replacement or dosing alone can provide." Random tests A centre for under privileged families in Derby was found to have higher than expected levels of lead in its water. Severn Trent Water called in PRS to help resolve the problem. The water that Severn Trent Water supplies its customers is virtually lead free. However, it can be picked up as the water passes through lead pipes that connect properties to its water pipes. It can also get into drinking water from lead-based soldered joints used on copper pipes or from lead plumbing inside properties. Severn Trent Water supplies approximately 3.7 million homes and businesses and proactively conducts random lead tests as a part of its ongoing water quality testing. During a routine inspection, a facility owned by Children First Derby – a 40-year- old charity providing care and support facilities to underprivileged families – was found to have a lead water service line on the customer's side. The facility's domestic water pipe, with a 15mm diameter, runs from the kerbside stop tap, under the building's foundation, through the building's walls and up to its water shut-off valve in the basement. Traditional replacement or re-routing methods to deal with the lead issue would have proven expensive and caused major disruption for the centre and its customers, resulting in a loss of this valuable community service for several days. Severn Trent Water suggested PRS as an alternative as its innovative pipe lining technology ePIPE could restore the lead service line with minimal intrusion and business downtime. ePIPE is Severn Trent Water's only approved lining solution for lead pipes, as well as one of the only pipe lining solutions within UK regulations capable of coating pipes on both public works and private works. A team from PRS arrived at the centre on the morning of the scheduled project date and completed the ePIPE lining process by early a€ernoon. The centre was only closed while the work took place in the morning and was able to resume service as usual by the a€ernoon, as if nothing had happened. The original lead levels, when tested at the tap before the ePIPE process, were nearly 2.5 times over the current maximum limit of 10 micrograms per litre. A€er the ePIPE epoxy coating was installed in the service line, lead levels measured at the tap dropped to 0.5 micrograms per litre, well below the maximum limit. Pipe bedding using "Class S" full granular surround covers many eventualities. But for most jobs, it's a big over-specifi cation. Choose rigid concrete pipes and you rarely need to specify Class S. So you can save money on imported bedding materials and muck-away to landfi ll. And you can reduce your carbon emissions and use of natural resources. To help you get the right Class of bedding at the right cost, visit www.concretepipes.co.uk and try our Structural Design and Materials Cost calculators. You'll be amazed at what you can save. Why it's an unnecessary drain on your budget. ● Hear more on the implementation of Irish Water's business plan 2015-2021 ● Take part in a discussion on optimising collaboration and innovation with the supply chain ● Discover strategies for improving quality, capacity and customer service nationwide BOOK NOW www.wwt-ireland.net DRIVING EFFICIENCY IN IRELAND'S WATER SECTOR This conference will provide you with the opportunity to: Sheenagh Rooney Director of Water Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) Dr Tom Collins Chair Public Water Forum Mark Macaulay Water Supply Strategy Lead Irish Water Maxine Mayhew Commercial Director Northumbrian Water Ger Shortle Agricultural Catchments Programme Manager Teagasc Darragh Page Senior Inspector - Drinking Water Team Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Paul Melia Environment Editor Irish Independent EXPERT SPEAKERS INCLUDE: CHAIR: SUPPORTED BY FOLLOW US @WWTlive #waterireland CHARITY PARTNER WATER IRELAND CONFERENCE 21 APRIL 2016 | PILLO HOTEL, ASHBOURNE WWTwaterIreland-HPHad.indd 1 18/11/2015 13:00 PRS arrived in the morning and completed the lining process by early afternoon
