IDA PRESIDENT November-December 2015 | Desalination & Water Reuse | 17 | components of sustainability: environment, human welfare and economic development. The IDA must continue to show that desalination and reuse – which are now mainstream water supply alternatives – not only help in closing this sustainability loop but also provide a strong tool in the adaptation to climate change. For this to be truly effective, the IDA needs to have the capability to produce its own knowledge products and reviews within the context of a global, multi-lingual society. Expanding our geographic reach The IDA needs to expand its reach and serve all desalination communities worldwide. We must be able to help those communities that are growing rapidly in importance, but are still not fully integrated in the global community through membership of the IDA and our affi liates. Examples include sub-Saharan Africa, the countries of Central Asia and South America. The broad awareness and enthusiasm of the new generation needs to be harvested and supported through the Young Leaders Programme. Another important aspect of the IDA's future is the need to increase our responsiveness to the changing world in which we operate. Some issues came into sharp focus leading up to and during the World Congress. One of those was the need to update our constitution to refl ect a new and different environment. Our constitution, crafted in 1985, has served us well for the past 30 years. But the world is very different today. Technology has changed the way we communicate. Desalination is now practised in 150 countries – an environment unlike that of three decades ago. We need to take a hard look at areas for improvement and be proactive in assessing and addressing often unintended consequences that threaten to hold us back from fulfi lling our critical role in helping the world fi nd better solutions to its water problems. I am committed to shepherding this process and creating an environment in which we can work hard to make the necessary changes that will enable the IDA to achieve its full potential. In closing, on a personal note, I like bringing people together. As the IDA's offi cial member magazine, Desalination and Water Reuse is the publication where, in the past, I have shared with readers my enthusiasm for new regions looming on the horizon of desalination. Among those contributions to the magazine was a paper about the potential for desalination in Australia and Southeast Asia more than 20 years ago and a more recent article focused on the needs and emerging opportunities in Latin America. I strongly believe in the principles behind a professional community like IDA, which brings together knowledge and experience in our industry for the common good. This is, and needs to remain, the key strategic objective of our association. I invite you to take part in this exciting journey and ask for your support in helping me discharge the responsibility that you have entrusted to my care.
