18 ALLIANCES 2016 BNM Alliance is a new joint venture between North Midland Construction and Barhale, that is tasked with delivering three tunnelling projects and one pipeline scheme on the Elan Valley Aqueduct. The work is for a multimillion-pound AMP6 Infrastructure contract extension by Severn Trent Water. The contract is part of Severn Trent's overall Strategic Resilience Plan to C2V+, the VolkerStevin and CH2M joint venture, is working on United Utilities' (UU) £43M design and build water treatment works (WTW) scheme in Oswestry. The project, part of UU's AMP6 Construction Delivery Partner framework, will enhance the existing Oswestry treatment works, which treats water from Lake Vyrnwy in North Wales through the Llanforda open reservoir. The scheme, which is expected to create more than 50 jobs over the next two years, will be one of the first in the UK to use a chlorine dioxide-based chemical process. Significant savings will be achieved through the installation of hydroelectric turbines that feed surplus energy back into the grid. The main elements of the project comprise a new flocculation / sedimentation basin, chlorine contact tank and clear water storage tank. secure Birmingham's water supply for the next century, which was approved by regulator Ofwat in the Final Determination published last December. The project at the Elan Valley Aqueduct involves investment in a new Earth Pressure Balanced Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), supplied by Herrenknecht, to deal with rock strengths up to 190mpa and 10bar of external water pressure. The existing rapid gravity filters are being refurbished to cater for an additional 40Ml of water flow per day when completed. Darren Hynes, framework director for the joint venture, said: "... we are delighted to be appointed for this scheme at this early stage of the framework. "It demonstrates the collaborative approach between C2V+ and United Utilities whilst providing sustainable employment opportunities for the local economy by creating more Severn Trent's Strategic Grid Team, working closely with feasibility consultant, Atkins Arup, tendered the four projects in record- breaking time to ensure that the ODI obligation date of March 2017 is met for the first project.
