It has been donated to the Lincolnsfields Children's Centre in Bushey, Watford, which hosts a large collection of World War II memorabilia. Two landfills close After 35 years of service, Ardley landfill site in Oxfordshire is now closed to non-hazardous waste. "This is an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to drive value from our waste hierarchy," said area unit manager Henry Austin. The waste will now be diverted to Viridor's new £205m energy recovery facility. Also located in Ardley, the ERF has the capacity to take 300,000 tonnes of waste a year, generating enough electricity for around 38,000 homes. Meanwhile, in Suffolk, waste will be diverted to Masons landfill site as Viridor closes the one in Wangford. Circular econ-army Zero Waste Scotland is looking to recruit 1,000 volunteers to help the public reduce waste and recycle more. The "grass roots circular economy revolution" will involve an army of zero waste advocates passing on their skills for upcycling, running cookery classes using leftovers or organising swapshops. A wide range of organisations can apply for funding until 17 May . The initiative builds on ZWS's existing volunteer network, through which over 700 volunteers have engaged over 20,000 people. EfW delivers fish park A proposed energy from waste plant has provided the catalyst to make Fleetwood's £20m fish park a reality. Plans for the development in Lancashire have been around for almost a decade, with the 13,000sqm site housing seafood processors. The economic case has been boosted thanks to the integration of a £60m EfW facility. Reform Energy, which will build the plant, said 80,000 tonnes of commercial waste will provide the feedstock, generating 10MW of electricity and 24MW of heat, all captured using combined heat and power technology supplied by Finnish company Valmet. Westcott Park PAS110 Shanks' anaerobic digestion plant in Buckinghamshire has been awarded PAS110 certification. The specification sets strict parameters on input materials and the site's management system to ensure a high quality digestate output. Westcott Park also produces enough energy to power 6,000 homes thanks to the treatment of 900 tonnes of food waste per week. Beddington ERF go-ahead Viridor has finally received the green light for its energy recovery facility in Beddington. London Borough of Sutton granted planning permission back in March 2014, but a legal challenge forced the decision to be scrutinised by the High Court and the Court of Appeal. A ruling has now been made that the Borough followed due procedure. With the "final obstacle" now removed, head of development projects Robert Ryan said construction work could now start as soon as this summer. Beddington's ERF will process 275,000 tonnes of residual, post-recycling waste, generating 26MW of electricity. Sita fined £20k Sita has been fined £20,000 by Perth Sheriff Court for its handling of leachate, a potentially polluting liquid, at its Binn Landfill (Glenfarg) site. The waste company pled guilty to breaching licensed conditions on leachate volume at times between 18 December, 2012 to 12 June, 2013, and to failing to report breaches to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Sita failed to maintain the two- metre limit for the leachate, which is required to ensure the base and sides of the landfill provide a barrier between the landfill and the environment.
