Its UK activities have been bolstered recently by two tunnelling contracts for water companies. A joint venture between Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Costain has won an £82M contract to build the Shieldhall Tunnel in Glasgow for Scottish Water. The tunnel, which will be the largest wastewater storage tunnel in Scotland, will improve water quality and help cope with the risk of flooding in the area served by Shieldhall Wastewater Treatment Works. The 5km tunnel is to run between Queen's Park and Craigton industrial estate in the south of the city, with a diameter of 4.7m. In another joint venture, this time with Costain and Bachy Soletanche, the company is among the preferred tenders to build the £4.2bn Thames Tideway Tunnel. The CVB joint venture joins two others on the project. The project is split into three geographical packages – BMB JV (BAM Nuttall, Morgan Sindall and Balfour Beatty Group) has the West contract; FLO JV (Ferrovial Agroman UK, Laing O'Rourke Construction) has the Central deal; and CVB JV has the East contract. VINCI Construction UK is also one of 11 contractors to have secured a place on the North West Construction Hub (NWCH) framework for projects valued between £2M and £9M. The NWCH is being managed by Manchester City Council and covers Cumbria, Merseyside, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Cheshire. tHE nuMBErs 2011 2012 2013 % cHAngE Sales £M 1,068.1 1,056.8 1,232.3 17 Gross profit £M 91.5 83 53.6 -35 Operating profit £M 10.9 9.6 1.6 -84 Pre-tax profit £M 17.3 9.9 2.3 -77 Staff 3,702 3,717 3,525 -5 Net assets £M 51.03 73.9 88.2 19 tHE rAtios 2011 2012 2013 % cHAngE Return on capital % 33.9 13.4 2.6 -81 Gross margin % 8.6 7.9 4.4 -45 Operating margin % 1 0.9 0.1 -86 Net margin % 1.6 0.9 0.2 -80 Sales/employee £K 288.3 284.3 349.6 23 concrete steel clean water civil engineering waste water An essential reference tool for the UK water industry and those who shape and influence the sector, providing accurate and up-to-date information to help identify water companies, authorities, industry suppliers, buyers and licensees.
