Its plans to grow in more profitable sectors, including oil and gas, power and accommodation, will help drive more sustain- able margins. It has also emphasised that the multibillion-pound investment planned by the water companies over the next five years makes the sector a strategically important one. The group has also stated a preference for regulated markets as they are less cyclical and the margin potential less volatile. Like other companies, the group has been affected by the contraction of the UK construction market, although it says there was growth in 2013/14. However, competitive tender margins remain tight, with signs of cost inflation as demand increases. During its last financial year, Laing O'Rourke constructed the break-pres- sure tank at Hallgates as part of Severn Trent Water's £44M Derwent Valley Aqueduct resilience programme to upgrade the Victorian water supply system. This tank is a first for the water company at this size and scale for a clean water retaining structure manufac- tured offsite. Laing O'Rourke's project team and Explore Manufacturing worked closely with Severn Trent to incorpo- rate the preferred DfMA (design for manufacturing and assembly) solution into the asset standards, where previously only a traditional in-situ concrete solution would have been acceptable. Laing O'Rourke is also formalising its delivery business capability in utility networks, such as power distribution, where it has expertise backed up by the technology platforms, specialist plant and equip- ment needed to efficiently deploy and manage resources on the multidisciplinary programmes of work typical of these markets.
