AMP6 has brought a lot of change – AMP7 will see the bene ts Welcome to The Leaders 2015, WET News' annual survey of the leading water industry contractors sent out in the May issue of WET News and the June issue of sister journal Water & Wastewater Treatment. In this special supplement we uncover this year's Top 10 contractors based on turnover, net margin, return on capital, sales per employee and operating margin. The past year has been an interesting time for water sector contractors mainly for one reason – the transition from AMP5 to AMP6 – and we look at whether the work behind the scenes to eliminate the traditional negative impact of the ‚ ve-year cycle has made a di„ erence this time round. Regulator Ofwat said the water companies could bring forward £440M from AMP6 into the ‚ nal year of AMP5. Did that transition investment happen? I would suggest the answer is no. I know of at least one water company that waited for its Final Determination rather than get projects moving early. There has been a lot of early contractor involvement activity in the run-up to AMP6, mostly involving consultants and Tier 1 contractors. Further down the supply chain there have been the traditional lay-o„ s but, hopefully, AMP6 work will materialise a lot sooner than has been the case in previous AMP cycles. The transition to AMP7 is expected to be a lot smoother, thanks to the sector's adoption of the totex approach, which should present opportunities for the supply chain. Then there's BIM, which is also presenting exciting opportunities for lean design and build, so creating greater e' ciencies and cost savings. The use of totex and BIM has placed greater importance on asset management, and whether it is necessary for new builds to meet future demands on the water and wastewater networks. AMP6 is here, and with it a lot of change. Contractors, no matter where they are in the supply chain hierarchy, must get to grips with these if they are not to be le" behind.
