Pump Centre Conference 2015 - Breakout Sessions Twelve free breakout sessions are running in parallel with the main technical conference. These are short technology-focused presentations that are designed to appeal to young engineers who are new to the industry and older engineers who wish to refresh speci c areas of their knowledge. They are run in the morning and repeated in the a ernoon, with places allocated on a rst-come, rst-served basis. Delegates can claim credit for attendance for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes. A PUMPS AND SYSTEMS - SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS Brian Nesbitt, Independent Pump Consultant Pumps don't operate in isolation: they require an external system. There is a liquid source on the pump inlet, and on the pump outlet, there must be a destination. Most engineers are familiar with centrifugal pump characteristic performance curves, but what does the system characteristic look like? Do all systems have the same characteristic? This session will discuss how the interaction between the system characteristic and the pump a• ects operating e• ciency and reliability. B CAVITATION - WHAT IS IT, WHY SHOULD I CARE & WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT? Dennis Goodlad, Pump Centre Consultant Cavitation is a serious problem for pumps and it can be an expensive issue to correct. This session explains what it is, why it is important and how it can be avoided. C REAL LIFE PROBLEMS FOUND IN PUMPING SYSTEMS - CASE STUDY EXAMPLES Mark Thomas, Flowcheck Flowcheck has specialised in performing hydraulic surveys on pumping stations and treatment works for over thirteen years. This presentation looks at case study examples and problems identi- ed on several of the projects they have been involved with. D THE PRINCIPLES OF MOTOR STARTING Geoff Brown, Pump Centre Consultant This session provides a brief introduction to the principle of starting a pump motor, highlighting the di• erent choices available and their advantages and disadvantages. E OVERCOMING HARMONIC ISSUES AT ABBEY MILLS PUMPING STATION Paul Johnson, Rockwell Automation With the increase in electricity prices and the penalty for harmonic contents from the Electricity supply company, see how Rockwell Automation Active Front End drives helps overcome issues on site at Abbey Mills Pumping station (Thames Water). PUMP CENTRE CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION 2015 11 F INTELLIGENT PUMPING WITHOUT A PLC Martin Richardson, ABB Adding intelligence to an asset without adding a PLC: a demonstration of what intelligent drives could do for you.
