22 WET NEWS APRIL 2015 The challenge of protecting homes and businesses from future flood events, despite increased pressure on government budgets, has received a shot in the arm with the roll-out of a cost-effective maintenance-free camera system that enables the public to take an active role in water level monitor- ing. Utilising GPRS wireless technology for transmitting high quality images both day and night in areas where there is no power source, the new cameras have been deployed by the EA at more than 50 high flood risk sites across southern England. With pictures available on demand, the EA's vast network of storm grilles and trash screens can be monitored remotely around the clock, eliminating the need for unnecessary inspection visits. The Nexus camera is housed in a stainless steel weather-proof pillar that can be installed and operation- al within 30 minutes. In partnership with the EA, Meteor expects to install 100-plus cameras during 2015. www.meteorcommunications.co.uk Tel: 01727 899990 The new portable data logger from HWM features high-speed radio communication for safe and easy use. LoLog R allows operators to download and program from outside the meter pit or within their vehicle, meaning they can avoid roads, hazardous areas and two-man lifts. Compact, submersible and battery powered, LoLog R is supplied in single- or dual-channel models. The analogue channel can be used for internal pressure, external pressure and 4-20mA. A digital channel is available for flow and status data. The dual option combines one analogue and one digital channel. LoLog R incorporates pulse interval timing to establish accurate recording of minimum flow. The unit can store up to 262,000 readings in non-volatile memory as standard, with the option to extend to 1m SLD Pumps and Power has introduced a de-silting settlement tank technology to its hire fleet. The de-silter has been introduced to help reduce the risk of sediment pollution and of sludge deposits entering watercourses at pumping project locations. The SLD de-silter system treats liquid run-off contaminated with suspended particles without the use of chemical coagulants. Test results have shown that the SLD de-silter is very efficient at trapping sediments in all cases. readings. Its lithium battery will last for five years under typical operating conditions. LoLog R is fully compatible with Radwin software, so data can be combined with other current and historical Radcom loggers. www.hwm-water.com Tel: 01633 489479 The optimum sediment removal efficiency was found to be 98% at an inlet solids content of 30g/l and a flow rate of 40m3/hr. In project applications contaminated water is pumped through filters and a weir system. Sediment collects in the base of the tank. The equipment is delivered with drain-off valves for maintenance, for shut-down and to prevent freezing up under adverse weather conditions. www.sldpumpspower.co.uk Tel: 0870 182 8992 Next generation suction pumps launched Vortex flowmeter aids heat management Krohne has developed the new OPTISWIRL 4200 vortex flowmeter for measuring conductive and non-conductive liquids, gases and steam. With one temperature sensor integrated as standard, the device can be installed as a heat meter in the feed line directly connected with an external temperature sensor in the return line. The gross and net heat calculation can be fed into a DCS to support advanced energy management. Temperature and pressure compensation options are still available for the new OPTISWIRL 4200 to enable calculation of standard flow volume under fluctuating pressures and temperatures (online density compensation). Both compensation functions are based on the standards of NIST (for gas) and IAPWS (for steam). About 90% of all vortex flowmeters are ordered one size smaller than line diameter in order to increase the flow speed and to get a wider measuring range. Here, the line has to be reduced before and widened after the sensor. www.krohne.com Tel: 01933 408518 Xylem has launched a next generation, global range of highly efficient in-line and end-suction pumps that exceed the strict 2015 European Ecodesign requirements that came into effect this year. The new Lowara e-series provides significantly improved energy savings of up to 23%. Additionally, its expanded and optimised hydraulic coverage makes this new series suitable for a much broader range of HVAC and industrial applications. The new series includes the e-NSC high performance end-suction pumps, the e-LNE vertical in-line pumps, and the e-SH stainless steel end-suction pumps. These models will be supplied with IE3 high efficiency motors in accordance with the European Union motor performance standards. For an even greater reduction in energy consumption, e-series pumps can be supplied with an optional Xylem Hydrovar variable speed drive. The motor-mounted, space-saving Hydrovar is 'plug-and- play' and automatically adjusts operating speeds to optimize pumping system efficiency. As a result, it can provide up to an additional 70 percent reduction in energy costs depending on the application. www.lowara.com Flexi-Clamp passes Manx trial Manx Utilities, a statutory board of the Isle of Man Government, performs complex electrical tests and maintenance work to keep systems working flawlessly. However, it had a problem finding a reliable and safe solution to measure the current flowing through Aculock fuses in a street level substation. It found the solution in Martindale Electric's new CM100 Flexi-Clamp, which is small enough in diameter to pass freely through the tube built in to the fuse in the LUCY Fuse Carrier. The CM100 has made the task of reaching around the Aculock fuse easy, instant and more importantly provides accurate measurement results. The CM100 passed a trial test period and is now in Manx Utilities list of officially approved equipment. The CM100 can measure true RMS AC current up to 3,000A in three ranges. The sensor is fitted with a Focusing on the water issues that matter It is estimated that by 2030, demand for fresh water will have increased by 30% and by 2050 one billion people will lack access to clean water, placing more responsibility on companies operating within the water industry to ensure water is treated as efficiently as possible to maximise supplies and minimise energy used. Grundfos Pumps has an extensive product portfolio that meets this demand. Take the issue of water leakage, where it is estimated that urban areas frequently record water leakage losses of 70%. Grundfos developed Demand Driven Distribution which, via its MPC Controller, addresses this problem by reducing the surplus water pressure in pipes, whilst reducing water hammer. Wastewater transport and flood control is another area much in the news that Grundfos has given significant focus to, and that offers a range of solutions from fully- customised pumping stations to complete prefabricated submersible pumping stations. www.grundfos.co.uk Tel: 01525 850000 1.8m lead and backlit display unit which can be used to record Min/ Max values and enables easy viewing of results in locations with difficult access. www.martindale-electric.co.uk Tel: 01923 441717 Durapipe UK has expanded its industrial pipework portfolio with the introduction of a clear PVC-U solution to its Guardian and PVC-U ranges, offering further flexibility to end users. The dual contained pipework system, Guardian, is now available with a standard (grey) PVC-U inner pipe and a clear PVC-U outer pipe to offer visual leak detection. A clear PVC-U pipe is also being added to the Durapipe PVC-U range to provide a solution when visual monitoring of processes is crucial. The ability to conduct a visual check to confirm the correct substance is flowing through a Sentinel Commercial has added a new 22mm KalGUARD system package to its scientifically-proven limescale prevention device range. The new 22mm package includes a zinc anode unit, water meter and controller, with the latter pre-set to a 22mm commissioning mode, making this a true 'plug and play' solution for businesses that rely on the availability of hot water. KalGUARD conditions water by dosing it with a very low level of stable zinc via an electrolytic process that uses a zinc anode and a copper cathode. This forces naturally-occurring calcium carbonate crystals to form as soft, non-deposit-forming aragonite rather than into hard, deposit- forming calcite (limescale). De-silting settlement tank joins SLD's hire fleet Clear solution added to Guardian pipework range system or the right chemical is being dosed into a process can reduce the need for costly monitoring equipment. Both of the new pipework systems are compatible with the existing fittings in the ranges. Guardian incorporates a patented Centra-Lok system that provides a solid fixed fitting, offering a true point of difference from other dual contained systems on the market. www.durapipe.co.uk Tel: 01543 279909 Self-sufficient camera aids flood defence When fitted on a rising main, WRAS-approved KalGUARD provides whole-system protection, and can help protect both new and existing KalGUARD prevents limescale build-up systems from limescale build-up. www.sentinelprotects.com Tel: 01928 704330 Data logging outside of meter pits
