Yet around the world, one child in three doesn't have good enough sanitation to prevent debilitat- ing, and sometimes fatal, diarrhoea. International charity WaterAid has called for a dedicated Sustainable Development Goal on water, sanitation and hygiene. Pro- viding these basic services for all by 2030 is essential to save lives and improve child health. WaterAid's Child of Mine campaign was launched during the festive season, the very time of year when we are most preoccupied by the happiness of children. It focuses on Mozambique to bring to life the realities fac- ing families all over the world. More than half of the population of Mozambique does not have access to safe water, and 79 per cent do not have access to safe sanitation. In Niassa province, one child in 71 will be killed before their fih birthday because of unsafe water and a lack of toilets. And children who have regularly been ill or malnourished during their first few years of life can be le with a chronic disease or disability. In 2013 Hilda Daniel (pictured, abover right) lost her son Edmilson to diarrhoea caused by dirty water. He was one of the 500,000 people who died of the same causes in 2013. Here she grasps his birth certificate. Hilda has four other children and wor- ries they will have the same fate as Edmil- son. "I know it's not good water. But I have no option. When my children ask for water I have to give it to them." Child of mine A look at the vital work being done by WaterAid in Mozambique to bring basic hygiene and clean drinking water to some of the poorest people in the world. For 33 years the UK water sector has supported the work of WaterAid around the world, helping to improve the lives of millions through improving their access to water and sanitation. Faversham House, publisher of Utility Week, has a long-standing partnership with WaterAid, and has raised £40,000 for the charity since 2005. Building on this relationship, the magazine will now bring regular updates and insights into WaterAid's campaigns. WaterAid is working with partners in communities in Mozambique and around the world to help deliver clean water and sanitation. Visit www.wateraid.org/uk to help.
