JANUARY 2015 WET NEWS 21 Rapid deployment of temporary pumps halted temperature loss and achieved optimum temperature. A solution: Enhancing pump capabilities during transition I t was clear to Anglian Water that the fixed pump infra- structure in place was not able to manage the new dry sol- ids and temperature regimes re- quired for the HPH process and this had to be addressed as quickly as possible. Pump hire specialist Sykes Pumps was brought in to advise and re- spond to the situation by sourc- ing and installing temporary pumps that were better able to cope with the increased dry sol- ids content. Chris Graham, sales director at Sykes Pumps, says: "We are a preferred supplier for Anglian Water and have a local depot in Scunthorpe close to the Pyewipe site, which meant we could have pumps down there on the same day to tackle the treatment works' immediate needs. "Once we had provided a stop gap measure to prevent any further temperature loss in the sludge, we could then recom- mend an ideal solution to raise the temperature up to 390C and keep it there." Sykes Pumps installed two diesel pumps within 24 hours of the first enquiry from Anglian Water. These ensured that the higher solids content was circu- lated more effectively, raising the sludge temperature. How- ever, as the pumps were required to run on a 24/7 basis, this was not the most cost-effec- tive long term solution. Minimised noise Graham continues: "We were able to provide silenced diesel pumps immediately, which ful- filled the task and minimised The electric submersible pumps installed on site meant Anglian Water could bring the sludge in the digesters to a consistent 6% solids and 39°C temperature Sulzer Pumps Wastewater UK Ltd 5th Floor Astral Towers Crawley West Sussex Tel: 01293 558169 Sulzerinnovation@sulzer.com www.sulzer.com Explore the full range of premium efficiency wastewater products. We were able to locate specialist wastewater submersibles from our extensive fleet and get them installed on site within two days of the initial enquiry." With the electric submersi- ble pumps installed and com- missioned on site, Anglian Water was able to bring the sludge in the digesters to a con- sistent 6% solids and 39°C tem- perature ready for the switch over. The temporary pumps remained on hire for four months while the thermal dry- ing process was shut down and decommissioned and the neces- sary changes were made to re- direct pipework, connecting the digesters to the new plant. The HPH system includes an integral mixing capability for the digesters that avoids the need for any pumps. As a result, once the process was fully oper- ational, the temporary sub- mersible pumps were no longer required and Sykes Pumps removed them from site. Jennings concludes: "Our two new 1.2 megawatt CHP plants process methane from the sludge and are used to gen- erate power for the boilers and site which can provide suffi- cient steam to heat the digesters to the required level on an as needed basis. "It is an extremely energy- efficient solution, with the sludge at both the beginning and the end of the energy gen- eration cycle!" n
