NEWS January 2015 Local Authority Waste & Recycling 9 New light recycling romance and BBC digs waste Lucy LED has joined the Recolight team as Bertie Bulb's new flame (or lamp)! The new mascot represents the more modern and 'greener' technology of LED lamps. It is hoped that both mascots with help to spread Recolight's message around the importance of recycling LEDs, lamps and luminaires. Recolight marketing manager Suzanne Castine said: "It is vital that as many people as possible learn about the need to 'recycle your light with Recolight' and it has been proven that the use of mascots can help to spread the word. Whilst having industry mascots is fun for all, Lucy LED signifies an important change in the lighting industry. Mascots tend to reach a wide audience with many people able to identify with loveable big characters. Bertie Bulb has always attracted young and old alike, and together, Bertie Bulb and Lucy LED were even popular with the City crowd when they embarked upon a tour this week". According to Recolight, one of the most important advantages of the LED bulb is that it does not contain any mercury and is therefore not classified as hazardous. Although LEDs currently represent less than 0.1% of the lighting waste stream, the proportion will gradually increase and therefore a new recycling process is required to adapt systems currently in place for gas discharge lamps. The BBC has announced that it will be running a three-part series on waste this year. Campaigner and chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall will attempt to get to grips with the millions of tonnes of waste generated in Britain each year. The three part series, Waste (working title), will follow Fearnley-Whittingstall as he tries to discover what really happens to the rubbish we carefully sort into our recycling bins each week. Fearnley-Whittingstall said: "I've been itching to take on the issue of waste for a while now, and to be given the opportunity to do so on BBC One is just brilliant. It's a scandal how much perfectly good food and brand new clothing are being thrown away, and how much unnecessary packaging is being dumped in landfill. "As ever, I hope we can make compelling shows that change the way people think and how things are done. Big businesses have been skirting around this issue for a while now, and it's time for them to face up to their responsibilities." Elsewhere, at the ADBA conference last month, Resource Minister Dan Rogerson praised waste. In October 2013 he was appointed Minister at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) with responsibility for water, forestry, resource management and rural affairs. He said that out of all his portfolios, "waste" forms an "important" part of it! Cool! Recycling Bits and Pieces management ahead of schedule.
