DECEMBER 2014 WET NEWS 3 T hames Tideway Tunnel, Kier Infrastructure and Barhale Trant Utilities are the latest signatories to the Green Construction Board-led Infra- structure Carbon Review (ICR). The new commitments were made at the Infrastructure Car- bon Review One Year On Confer- ence, hosted by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). Launched in 2013, the ICR scheme is a joint industry and government initiative targeted at leading businesses and their sup- ply chains with the aim of mak- ing carbon reduction an integral part of the UK's infrastructure construction. Thames Tideway Tunnel's environment manager, Suzanne Burgoyne, said: "We are proud to F amily-run company Hardy Services is renovating Wayoh reservoir, near Bolton, as the ' rst stage of a £160,000 programme to im- prove safety at ' ve reservoirs in the North-west. The contract has been awarded by United Utilities (UU). The work at Wayoh involves cleaning the spillway by remov- ing all the vegetation and jet- washing the face of the stone- work before pressure-grouting the original stone sets to secure the spillway and prevent it declining further. A second team from Hardys has already begun similar work Infrastructure rms sign up to carbon review — Contractors and infrastructure rms pledge lower carbon emissions, contributing to an annual saving of 24 million tonnes of CO 2 . Reservoir renovation deal for Hardy at Quarry Hill, in Cumbria, and engineers will then move onto Borrans, Horlock and Penning- ton reservoirs. The programme will be completed by mid-2015. Paul Hardy, managing direc- tor of Hardy Services, said: "Each project has its own chal- lenges, from reservoir œ ood contingencies, cray' sh, ecolog- ical and environmental issues, the weather or just the simple fact that we can't stop the water course. This contract gives us a fantastic base to push forward and grow the business." Through the Infrastruc- ture Carbon Review we are dem- onstrating our commitment to low carbon and the protection of the wider environment." The conference heard that some 30 organisations have endorsed the joint initiatives to reduce carbon in infrastructure. This could amount to an annual saving of 24 million tonnes of car- bon dioxide equivalent by 2050, delivering a bene' t to the UK economy of up to £1.46bn a year and contributes towards meeting the Construction Leadership Council's 2025 50% carbon reduc- tion ambition. BIS¤ minister Nick Boles told delegates: "All the evidence shows that cutting carbon is good for business. That's why companies responsible for some of the country's largest infra- structure projects have made this important commitment. "Companies like HS2 Ltd, National Grid, Skanska and their supply chains are leading the way in e¥ orts to reduce carbon, saving valuable resources as well as reducing costs. I'd like to extend this challenge to infra- structure companies and organi- sations across the UK so they can claim their share of the economic rewards of reducing carbon." Peter Hansford, government chief construction adviser and member of the Green Construc- tion Board, said: "I am pleased to see the enthusiastic support of clients and suppliers across the infrastructure sector. The indi- vidual commitments they have made will go a long way towards achieving our ambitions of reducing cost and carbon emis- sions in the built environment over the next decade. I encourage others to come on-board." Wetter together. Another punt for story on £14bn 'super canal' plan to route water from Scotland to SE England. @MartynMcL YOU WHAT? Thought I might have missed a few months & this was April 1st. @DickWinchester @MartynMcL Why not just build a see-through roof over Scotland & tilt it towards South? No need for canals. We win, they win. @jfpenman Because of water shortages in England, they're planning to build a 'super canal' between Scotland and England. Get yer own bloody water! @calum_craig1996
