DECEMBER 2014 WET NEWS 21 WHAT'S NEW! Processing organic waste Advetec has launched an industrial scale Bio-Thermic Digester (BTD) to rapidly process and significantly reduce high volumes of organic waste, particularly in wastewater. The new solution is set to dramatically change how water companies deal with the growing and costly issue of effluent, providing a cost effective solution to landfill. The result of eight years development and manufactured in the UK, the Bio-Thermic Digester is a containerised solution capable of converting 33 tonnes of organic waste material, over a 48-72 hour period, reducing the volume by more than 96%. The technology will handle a range of waste streams including human waste sludge and organic green wastes. The resulting discharge is clean water and a small quantity of sterile waste material. The company's BTD technology has been trialled and tested in small applications over four years in the UK, the US and the Middle East. www. advetec.net Tel: 01761 433434 Detecting multi-gas hazards Honeywell has announced the European launch of the GasAlertMi- croClip XL, the latest addition to its GasAlertMicroClip line of gas detectors. The multi-gas detectors are easy to wear, slim and compact and provide affordable protection from atmospheric gas hazards. The new GasAlertMicroClip XL features an enhanced battery, with gas alarm capabilities of up to 18 hours. The detector also features all-weather performance and operates in cold and harsh environmental conditions. The GasAlertMicroClip XL offers affordable personal protection from Hydrogen Sulfide, Carbon Monoxide, Oxygen and combustible gas hazards. Suited to a wide range of industrial applications, including MCERTS for transmitter Endress+Hauser has achieved MCERTS certification for its CM44x analytical transmitter and associated CPS11D pH electrode. The award follows both laboratory testing and a field test on the effluent from a wastewater treatment works. The transmitter and electrode utilise the Memosens data transmission technology seen across the majority of Endress+Hauser's analytical range. Now MCERTS installations can benefit from the technology that eliminates the problems of corrosion, leaks and confined space entry, this four gas detector provides comfort and ease of operation. For simple, cost-effec- tive management of records, calibration and bump testing, the GasAlertMicroClip XL is complement- ed by BW Technologies by Honeywell's MicroDock II automatic test and calibration system and Fleet Manager II software. www. honeywellanalytics.com Tel: +41 (0)44 9434300 measured value distortion from moisture. Memosens also makes maintenance far easier, reduces downtime and cuts the whole-life cost of the measurement. The CM44x is a multi-parameter, multi-channel device that is also utilised in Endress+Hauser's MCERTS-certified range of automatic and portable samplers. This provides commonality and ease of use across many applications working to MCERTS standards. The CPS11D is a general pH electrode suitable for the majority of applications requiring a certified device. www. uk.endress.com/analysis Tel: 0161 286 5050 Xmas special: A round-up of some of the most innovative ideas introduced during 2014. Hach Lange monitoring equipment used at Welsh Water Hach Lange is supplying sensors to Black & Veatch for measuring organic load, turbidity and chlorine on Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water's £100M Go to Green programme. For the measurement of organic load, Hach Lange will supply the UVAS plus SC, an immersion probe featuring a multiple beam absorption photometer with effective turbidity compensation, a flash lamp photometer and a built-in wiper that automatically cleans the sensor window. Turbidity will be measured by the 1720E, a continuous-reading white light nephelometric turbidimeter designed for low-range monitoring from 0.0001 to 100.0 NTU. A wall-mounted colorimetric analyser, the CL17, will be deployed for the measurement of free chlorine with a measurement range from 0.03 - 5mg/l free residual chlorine. www. hach-lange.co.uk Tel: 0161 872 1487 Ridgistorm-XL keeps flooding at bay Polypipe's Ridgistorm-XL large diameter piping system has been used as part of a flood alleviation scheme for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. The Gulls Way capital works scheme in Heswall, Wirral, required combined sewer improvements along a residential street where the existing 450mm concrete sewer had insufficient capacity to cope with high volumes of rainfall, causing the surrounding road and a number of properties to flood during storm events. Working with Welsh Water, consultant engineer AECOM, main contractor Costain and groundworker Mulcair from an early design stage, Polypipe supplied a fully engineered Ridgistorm-XL attenuation system comprising a dual pipe run to provide an additional 360m3 of storage. As well as providing Ridgistorm-XL pipes in 900mm diameters, Polypipe also utilised its large diameter piping and its ability to prefabricate structural components to create a number of 1,500mm chambers and modular H access manholes to sit between the pipe runs. www. polypipe.com/wms Tel: 01509 615100 SAM-1 for smart measuring The SAM-1 Smart Aqua Meter from Sensorex harnesses the convenience of handheld smart devices to measure and record pH, ORP, conductivity and temperature values. Compatible with both Apple and android smartphones and tablets, SAM-1 delivers accurate analytical measurements in the lab or field for use in environmental, education and industrial applications. The SAM-1 plugs into the headphone jack of a smartphone or tablet and connects to Sensorex smart analytical sensors for measurement. The SAM-1 App, available as a free download, instantly recognises the smart sensor type and calibration data. The interface makes taking measurements and managing data simple and error-free, eliminating handwritten logs and potential for transcription errors. Time, date, and GPS location are automatically recorded with each reading and users may add location name and additional comments. www. sensorex.com Tel: 01714 8954344 ProtoCOL 3 for precise identification Synbiosis has introduced a new software module for the ProtoCOL 3 automated colony counter. The addition of this software makes Protocol 3 one of the first commercial automatic microbial identification and counter of colonies cultured on CHROMagar plates. With minimal training, microbiologists can use the system to rapidly identify and enumerate all key clinical, water and food-borne pathogens. The new ProtoCOL 3 software module, which was developed in partnership with major media manufacturer CHROMagar, ensures that the ProtoCOL 3 system can accurately identify any bacteria or yeast cultured on a CHROMagar plate in less than a minute, saving microbiologists hours of visually inspecting colonies, and manually recording results. The software module analyses the image and distinguishes between rose pink and dusty pink, as well as turquoise from steel blue. This allows precise identification of common pathogens, including Salmonella spp, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, E.coli, Group B Streptococci, Listeria spp, Vibrio spp and Pseudomonas spp. www. synbiosis.com/chromogenic-id Tel: 01223 727125 Improving distributor siphon performance Ham Baker Adams has won several new orders to improve the operational performance of distributor siphons, replacing cast iron units with reduced weight, yet stronger, non-corrosive plastic siphons. By lowering weights for manual handling to make routine mainte- nance much easier and safer on site, this innovative replacement by Ham Baker Adams also improves operation of the rotary distributor, with all new siphons optimised to suit conditions. Working together with water companies and contractors to bring about the best results, Ham Baker Adams has also introduced ball valves, which significantly improve cleaning of the break pipe. Likewise, union joints on the air pipework reduce weight and are easily removable for superior cleaning or replacement. In addition, adjustable studs allow height adjustment to optimise the performance of the siphon dome. www. hambaker.co.uk Tel: 01782 203611 Portable monitoring safeguards water quality A new portable turbidity monitor has been developed by Analytical Technology (ATi) that offers continued remote monitoring of water discolouration and better accuracy at lower levels. NephNet is one of the first battery-powered, portable turbidity monitors that gives the same measurement performance as the more traditional fixed monitor, with no compromise on measurement. ATi teamed up with PODDS to develop a monitor that would help safeguard water quality for consumers. The new technology offers a string of benefits to help water companies control their mains flushing, including continuous remote monitoring of turbidity; better accuracy at lower levels; fast connection to water mains via hydrants; and wireless communica- tions and alarms. Early trial results show how the use of NephNet allows huge savings when planning or carrying out flushing. A main that was needing major refurbishment and possible relining was instead gradually cleaned by changing the flow using turbidity as the control. This controlled cleaning over several weeks saved the water company more than £1M. www. atiuk.com Tel: 0800 804 6062 Universal pipe fittings Plasson has launched a new line solving the connection issues on older, existing pipelines. The Plasson pushfit Universal fittings have a wide tolerance and allow connections to a pipe of any pipe material in the 14mm-18mm, 19mm-22mm and 24mm-28mm ranges, so lead, copper, galvanised iron, alkathene and other pipe materials can be accommodated in one universal fitting end, the other end accepting the metric polyethylene. The fitting provides a secure and reliable connection to any pipe, and are no adaptors and no loose components. Features include being tamper resistant so it is not vulnerable to unauthorised disconnection. Plasson pushfit requires no special tools to use, merely mark insertion depth on the pipe and push it in up to the mark. The full pushfit range covers 20mm to 63mm metric polyethylene pipes, connecting service pipes for domestic and commercial sizes in the one range. The system includes couplings, threaded fittings, tees, elbows, reducers, stopcocks and terminal fittings. www. plasson.co.uk Tel: 01444 244446
