Yorkshire Water had used precast concrete on 11 other reservoirs in AMP5 at Stannington, Awick, Steeton, Scawton, Richmond, Helifield, Cranoe, Cowling, Moortown, Gallowgate and Grassington. However, the volume of Bramley was significantly greater – twice as much as Moortown which was 8ML. The others ranged from roughly 500m³ to 8ML therefore the in situ option was reviewed again. "Precast was decided upon because it was more cost effi- cient, even at the larger volume, and because of the benefit in terms of safety and quality," Ellis says. The contractor, MMB, a joint venture between Mott MacDon- ald and JN Bentley – the latter which has since been subsumed into Mott MacDonald – says the installation of precast compo- nents saved seven weeks in terms of time and resulted in a capital efficiency claim of £743,000. The scheme design began in June 2012 and continued until construction began in January 2013. The contract was carried out under the Yorkshire Water and MMB AMP5 reservoirs framework. MMB says it has a strong his- tory of innovating with on-site and design teams that work together to maximise the bene- fits of prefabricated compo- nents, which save time and Organised by Supported by Asset management and innovation will have a key role to play in helping water companies to deliver on PR14 objectives. Now in its 3 rd year, the annual Water Industry Asset Management Conference has achieved "must-attend" status within the water industry asset management community. Attend to: • Understand how your peers are adapting to the paradigm shift that Totex and a customer-focussed price review process has introduced in AMP6 • Gain insight into how Financial Directors are balancing Totex and traditional accounting methods in PR14 • Hear the latest thinking and research around aligning investment decisions with customer benefits • Find out how your peers are driving operational efficiency to deliver effective asset management within the context of affordability • Discuss how water companies' asset data strategies will be impacted by Totex Book NoW at www.WWT-asset.net Expert speakers include Susan Davy Pennon Group Sarah McMath Thames Water John Bridgeman Professor of Environmental Engineering University of Birmingham Jo Harrison United Utilities David Elliott Wessex Water Jim Barlow Environment Agency John Bentley Severn Trent Water Follow us @WWTlive using #waterasset Chair WIAM-HPH.indd 1 04/11/2014 16:07 Fed up with digging in the wrong place? MMB says precast SREs can save up to 25% in cost through shorter build time and process efficiencies, based on traditional construction methods. Digital and 3D The new SRE was to be predom- inantly grass covered and the area landscaped to look like the existing SRE. Building Informa- tion Modelling (BIM), a new soware package that involves the generation and manage- ment of digital representations of physical and functional char- acteristics, was used heavily on the Bramley project. MMB says BIM provides a more efficient method of design- ing, building and maintaining assets, eliminating the need for separate sets of drawings, schedules and other documents DECEMBER 2014 WET NEWS 11
