NEWS November 2014 Local Authority Waste & Recycling 9 West London waste train, Pickles and Poundland The 'Rubbish Diet' group is calling on Londoners to get on board the waste train and prevent waste. The waste train takes West London's waste to landfill. It's a third a mile long. It leaves six days a week. A total of 67% of the rubbish on board could have been recycled, according to the Rubbish Diet group. In a statement, the Rubbish Diet group said: "Get on board and help us shrink the waste train - take the Rubbish Diet - sign up at therubbishdiet.org.uk/waste train". If you did attend you may have felt the tension in the room like LAWR did. You probably were standing because of the lack of seats in the room. Some audience members in the show theatre were visibly angered by Pickles comments over weekly collections, with many taking the opportunity to ask the minister why he thought central government knew what was best for residents. He responded and said that if councils were to conduct a survey of "what residents wanted" most would back weekly collections. And, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) chief executive Steve Lee, who chaired the session, was accused by the minister of "abusing his position" after asking for a show of hands on who thought weekly waste collections were the best way to improve recycling rates. Speaking after the event to the CIWM Journal, Lee said: "I don't know about you, but my feet are tired and my voice is husky from too much talking." He also said that this year's RWM with CIWM has been a resounding success. He added: "For us it was a great event. For me, the by-word was fresh." Retailer Poundland has appointed Helistrat to manage the Company's waste and recycling services in a five-year deal worth an estimated £4 million. The contract will see Helistrat manage the back of store recycling services for Poundland's entire retail estate of 500 stores in the UK and Ireland, as well as the company's new purpose built distribution centre in Harlow, Essex. Helistrat was selected following a tender process during which they were able to draw on their proven track record of working with major retailers to deliver significant commercial and environmental benefits resulting from increased recycling rates and reduced waste to landfill.
