November 2014 Local Authority Waste & Recycling 19 WASTE COLLECTION lid-locking device that automatically locks on closing, similar to a car bon- net, which eliminated the need for any additional external locking system. One of our most popular innovations at present is the dBin, a soundproofed bin for glass recycling that reduces noise associated with the depositing and collection of glass by 22 decibels, which means glass no longer nega- tively impacts on local communities. North Lanarkshire Council has cur- rently installed four of these bins and purchased 40 more. Kenneth Wilson, head of environment and estates at the Council, says: "The Council aims to increase recycling rates and we provide a number of recycling points to help residents do this. We appreciate that glass recycling can be noisy so we're interested in any innovative ways to reduce noise in our communities. These new bins will help us achieve our environmental objectives for recy- cling and needs of our residents." The waste industry is developing new ways in which to improve waste collection all the time. The challenge now for producers and service provid- ers is to continue to take responsibility for proactively developing new solu- tions, retain an ability to be flexible to the needs of the local authority and the end user and continue to invest in research and development. After all, whilst the nature of waste handling has irrevocably changed over the last 20 years one thing is for sure; it's only going to continue changing. Mark Jenkins is sales manager at Taylor UK.
