The team selected sites capable of supporting tests appropriate to the needs of wastewater treatment professionals involved in large-scale design and development projects. These included locations that allowed research on smaller-scale applica- tions and semi-industrial pilot plants to be conducted. The wastewater treatment plants selected are: Walvis Bay, Namibia; Al Aweer plant, Dubai (pilot plant for BOD and nitrifica- tion); Managua, Nicaragua and The Batumi plant in Tskali, Georgia. Lessons learned so far… Over the past 18 months, the research teams have visited each site regularly for anything up to 90 days at a time to perform water quality measurements and make any necessary process amendments to the process. An im- mense amount of data has been gath- ered and is currently being analysed.
