NEWS September 2014 Local Authority Waste & Recycling 9 Doctor Who experience and environmental 'ticking timebomb' If you haven't heard of the loom band craze, where have you been? The loom band craze is an environmental "ticking timebomb" because the bands can't be recycled, consumer groups have been warned. Resource industry experts fear that thousands of the colourful elastic bands, which children make into bracelets, necklaces and even clothing, are being discarded in the street. Young single adults are the worst social group for recycling their rubbish, a new survey by BusinessWaste.co.uk has found. A lack of a second person to give motivation to sort their waste is being blamed for empty recycling bins outside houses and flats up and down the country, a major British waste management company says. Doctor Who fans were treated to a new series last month. Yet, here at LAWR we question this Doctor's environmental commitments. Giving an interview to The Sunday Times, the actor who plays the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, said: "One thing the show does well is balance the epic and the domestic. Really? Another question mark has been raised by the actions of one woman in Redbridge, north east London. She will have to pay £650 after she was taken to court by Redbridge Council for using her children to fly-tip two old sofas. The woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her children, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Councillor Ross Hatfull, cabinet member for community safety & enforcement said: "It's time people irresponsible enough to consider fly-tipping realised that they run the risk of a large fine and a criminal record. If we have evidence we will not hesitate to prosecute them." Recycling Bits and Pieces management Collection' has been launched at the Science Museum and has been led by acclaimed by the Science Museum over 30 days as part of its Climate Change programme. normally throw away". He added: "I think it is brave of the Science Museum to YOUR ROUND-UP OF THIS MONTH'S TOP STORIES ACROSS THE INDUSTRY BIN HEAVEN - CK Services has been appointed by Craemer UK to provide wheeled bin distribution and recycling services to the Borough of Poole. As well as the distribution of new wheelie bins, the CK Services team will collect around 61,000 end of life wheeled bins which will be recycled through the CK Group recycling plant in Lincolnshire.
