Founded in 1927, ESB is one of Ireland's leading companies, with an annual revenue of €3 billion
and 7,000 employees on the island of Ireland. It is a vertically integrated utility with generation,
networks and supply businesses, as well as a highly successful international and telecoms business.
Over the past decade, ESB has undertaken a €6 billion investment programme to successfully
refurbish the Republic of Ireland's electricity infrastructure. It is the first energy company in Europe
to set a date to decarbonise its power generation activities and will be delivering one-third of its
electricity from renewable sources. To facilitate sustainability targets and economic growth, ESB is
developing an advanced smart networks system and at the end of 2010 it also acquired networks
business Northern Ireland Electricity, a company with a regulated asset base of €1.2 billion.
