JRC manages the block allocations of spectrum for the gas and electricity industries in order this scarce natural resource is used efficiently and in a way amenable to use by the utilities. Radio services for the utilities broadly fall into four categories: a) Mobile services for vehicles on the move and personnel on large sites. Increasingly, this extends beyond simple voice communications through to data transmission and automatic vehicle location. b) Telemetry Links to provide remote monitoring, status and condition of networks together remote switching to reconfigure or control networks from central control centres. c) Remote Meter Reading for data collection and monitoring usage of resources. d) Microwave links used as part of the infrastructure either to link elements of the mobile or scanning telemetry systems, or to provide trunk telecommunications within the area of the utility. e) Radio link corordination with wind farms.
