The distribution business is responsible for the development of the pipeline network and also for providing a 24/7 operational and transportation service platform to gas suppliers under the rules of the company's network code. The Phoenix network currently extends to 3,100km of intermediate, medium and low pressure mains, which distribute natural gas throughout the licence area, representing around 50% of the population of Northern Ireland. It is developing an underground salt cavern gas storage facility beneath the Isle of Portland in Dorset, with a total expected capacity of 1,000 million cubic metres ("mcm") ((35 billion cubic feet ("bcf") or 365 million therms)) of natural gas. This new facility will be a key piece of UK gas infrastructure and the largest onshore gas storage facility in the United Kingdom and is projected to provide up to 7.5% of UK demand for gas on winter days.
