With its main offices at Celtic Springs, Newport, the company covers 1/6th of the UK and its catchment area has a population of 7.4 million. WWU employs over 1,300 management and staff and around 700 contractors who provide additional day-to-day operational services. WWU's primary role – undertaken on behalf of 'gas shippers' – is to transport gas to the gas meters of homes and businesses in Wales and the South West of England, from the Northern Welsh border to Cornwall and to undertake the gas emergency service in Wales and the South West. WWU is owned by a consortium of long term investors led by the Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund which is managed by a member of the Macquarie Bank Group, a global leader in the infrastructure sector.
